Feyenoord’s season is quickly turning into a faultless campaign and part of the reasoning behind such a spectacular year lies with Santiago Giménez. The Mexican forward is the team’s top scorer, with 16 goals, and has managed to gain a place in Arne Slot’s starting XI, having first arrived as substitute. This past weekend he was once again decisive, scoring the second goal in a 1-3 win over rivals Sparta Rotterdam.

Feyenoord started with Danilo as the main striker. Recently arrived from Ajax, the team’s goalscoring hopes were pinned on him in the summer. His signing paid off instantly, as he scored five goals in his first five games for Feyenoord, but Santiago Giménez gradually took his place with goals after the World Cup. Since the Eredivisie returned at the beginning of January, he has scored seven goals in the league, two in the Cup and one more in the Europa League. Ten goals in 1,116 minutes, not bad at all.

He is the first Mexican under-21 to score more than 10 goals in Europe. The left-footer stands out for his movement and the intensity he puts into each match. He does not leave the area and, although he is not tall, he manages well in the air. The striker has been linked with Porto, Benfica and Brighton, but between now and summer more rumours will surely emerge regarding a player who only cost €4 million and who has already considerably increased his worth.
