Club América’s search for a new head coach continues, with Atlético San Luis boss André Jardine the latest name to be linked with a switch to Las Águilas. Speculation over his possible appointment at Estadio Azteca intensified over the weekend when he was spotted at Mexico City International Airport on Sunday but the Brazilian quickly moved to play down any contact with Liga MX’s most successful club.

Jardine close to Atlético San Luis extension

Jardine landed in the Mexican capital on Sunday and appeared surprised to find a number of reports awaiting his arrival. Somewhat inevitably, he was asked whether his trip had anything to do with the vacancy in the América dugout but the Brazilian denied that he was in town to do a deal with Los Azulcremas, instead stating his visit was an administrative one.

Not only that but Jardine, who won a gold medal with Brazil at the 2020 Olympic Games, fended off América’s potential interest by revealing that he is on the verge of signing a new contract with Atlético San Luis, where he has been head coach since February 2022.

Who won’t coach Club América?

Jardine appears to be the latest in a long line of managers who have ruled themselves out of taking over at Club América. Juan Carlos Osorio, Diego Alonso and Javier Aguirre were early frontrunners but won’t be taking over from Fernando Ortiz, now at Monterrey. Former Spain manager Robert Moreno has also distanced himself from the job having previously come close to taking over in 2019.

When does the Apertura 2023 tournament start?

Youth coach Diego Cervantes will take charge of the first team for upcoming friendlies in the United States against Toluca and Monterrey but is highly unlikely to still be in charge when the Apertura 2023 tournament kicks off on Friday 30 June.
