Club América youth coach Diego Cervantes will take charge of the first team for the upcoming US friendlies against Toluca and Monterrey, as Las Águilas’ search for a new permanent boss continues.

Having parted company with Fernando Ortiz in late May after América’s semi-final exit in the Clausura 2023 tournament, the club have so far been unable to find a replacement ahead of the Apertura 2023 championship.

The 13-time domestic champions begin their Mexican league campaign at home to Juárez on Friday 30 June.

Who is Diego Cervantes?

Cervantes, 38, is the head coach of América’s under-20 team. This year, he led the youth side to the final of the Clausura 2023 under-20 tournament, losing 2-1 to Toluca in the trophy decider.

The Mexican is a former América defender, having had two spells at the Mexico City club during his playing career. After emerging at San Luis in 2004, he joined América for a three-year period in 2005, before returning to the Estadio Azteca for a brief stint between 2010 and 2011.

Monterrey are now coached by Ortiz, after the Argentine was confirmed as Víctor Manuel Vucetich’s replacement a week after leaving América.
