A decision about the future of Ángel di María is causing problems in Argentina. A new episode of threats has unfolded in the streets of Rosario. According to a local journalist, two hooded individuals on a motorcycle opened fire on a gas station in the Lamadrid and Oroño area, in the southern part of the city. At the scene, a note addressed to the Benfica player was found.

“We are waiting for you, Di María, the people of Rosario,” it read.

Why is Di María receiving death threats?

Since the former Real Madrid player began considering the possibility of returning home, he and his family have endured several unpleasant incidents. The first was a threat left on his doorstep. At the end of March, the player’s family experienced a troubling episode when a threat was left at the entrance of their exclusive neighborhood.

“Tell your son Ángel not to return to Rosario, or we will kill a family member. Not even [Santa Fe governor, Maximiliano] Pullaro can save you. We don’t throw little papers. We throw lead and dead bodies.” As the car drove away, several shots were fired into the air.

A few weeks ago, another incident occurred through a mural on the streets of Rosario. “You’ll still come back,” was written over his face. This did not go unnoticed by the Argentine government. Patricia Bullrich, Argentina’s Minister of Security, commented on the footballer’s decision to return to play in his home country. For now, Di María has declined an offer from Rosario Central after receiving death threats against his family.

“I spoke two or three times with Di María’s father. They were very scared, and I understand them. They target the most well-known people and cause a lot of uproar. I call this narco-terrorism. It’s a personal and family decision,” she said in statements to Cadena 3 radio in Rosario.

Is MLS an escape route for Di María?

This new incident could be decisive for Di María to rule out the option of playing for Rosario Central, which he always had in mind ever since leaving for a glorious career in Europe. Another strong possibility is that he may go to the MLS, specifically to Inter Miami alongside his friend Lionel Messi. The option of staying one more year at Benfica is also not off the table, as the Portuguese club is offering him a contract renewal. While the thugs should never get their way, the risks will also have to be considered.
