Fresh from leading Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup, Messi caused a stir in Mexico by posing with compatriot Juan Ignacio Dinenno’s Pumas shirt.
Lionel Messi was a hot topic among Mexican social-media users on Monday, after the Argentina star was pictured posing with a Pumas shirt given to him by countryman and Auriazules forward Juan Ignacio Dinenno.
Dinenno “speechless” as Messi poses with shirt
It was Dinenno himself who shared the photo on Instagram, the player unable to hide his joy at seeing the World Cup winner holding his No. 9 jersey. “Speechless”, the 28-year-old wrote, in a post that led numerous Pumas supporters to thank Messi for the gesture.
Pumas out to bounce back after poor Apertura 2022
After failing to make the playoffs in the Liga MX’s Apertura 2022 championship, Pumas head into the Clausura 2023 with a new head coach in charge, Rafael Puente del Río replacing Andrés Lillini in the dugout at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
The seven-time Mexican champions have had mixed results in preseason, having failed to reach the final of the Copa Sky friendly tournament, despite beating Apertura 2022 regular-season winners Club América.
Pumas play their first game of the Clausura 2023 at home to Juárez on Sunday 8 January.
