Arne Slot gives Wirtz injury update, how long will German be sidelined

Liverpool are set for back-to-back fixtures against Wolves this week, but it looks like they will be without their star summer signing, Florian Wirtz.

Update:

Liverpool have won their last four matches in all competitions and are set for a busy next couple weeks, with fixtures in the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League all in the near future. Manager Arne Slot has warned they could be without one of their most in form players for at least the next week.

Wolves fixtures too soon for Wirtz

Florian Wirtz missed Liverpool´s last two matches, and Arne Slot has updated the German stars progression a day before the first of two matches against Wolverhampton this week. “The game probably comes too soon tomorrow and maybe the game at the weekend. We hope to have him back next week,” said Slot.

The former Bayer Leverkusen sensation who made the move to Anfield this summer injured his back in the prematch warm up against Nottingham Forest two weekends ago, and has been out since, missing the 0-1 victory at City Ground, and then the 5-2 win over West Ham on Saturday.

Now their attention turns to the league match against Wolves on Tuesday, but Slot is far from optimistic that Wirtz will be fit for either of two fixtures against Wolves this week. “At this moment in time, I don’t know. Usually when I say that, I do know and I don’t want to share that. But this time, I honestly don’t know.”

Reds staying alive in all comps

Liverpool will likely have to take care of business without Wirtz this week, and hope that the German can return for the first leg of their Round of 16 Championship League tie against Galatasary next week. They will travel to Istanbul before returning home for a league fixture against Tottenham, and then have the return leg against the Turkish side at Anfield.

It was a difficult start to the campaign for The Reds, but they are in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup, still alive in Champions League and they are in the Top 5 of the Premier League after winning four of their last five. While he will miss the match against last placed Wolves in the league and Cup, Slot is hoping he will get the 22 year-old back for one of the most important stages of the season.

Wirtz had a blistering start to 2026, scoring four goals and two assists in January before his set back, and Slot applauded the way that his midfielder plugged into the side after his first few months as a Red. “It’s a big accomplishment for Wirtz to stay fit for such a long time because he had to make a step up from where he played to the Premier League and Liverpool. It tells a lot about his mentality and work rate that he has stayed fit for so long,” concluded the Liverpool manager.
