Update:

A season that once hinted at a historic quadruple has narrowed somewhat. Arsenal’s defeat in the EFL Cup final to Manchester City and their FA Cup quarterfinal exit to second tier Southampton have stripped away the excess. While Gunners’ fans will be disappointed, what remains must be the focus. And a hugely successful double of the Premier League and the Champions League is still very much on the cards.

For the domestic league, there is only one rival, Pep Guardiola’s Citizens lurking, and the run-in will define this Mikel Arteta team’s legacy.

What is Arsenal’s path to the EPL title?

On the surface, Arsenal’s schedule looks slightly kinder, whether looking at the relative level of the opponents or the home advantage that appears at key moments. Most people, and the occasional supercomputer tasked to think hard, predict them to win the title.

Bournemouth at home falls into the “should win” category, though Andoni Iraola has built a side capable of unsettling anyone. It is not a free three points, just one Arsenal are expected to claim if they do not want to be compared to their north London rivals, Spurs. It should be noted that a Champions League quarterfinal against Sporting in Lisbon could have an affect.

With the European second leg to navigate midweek, then comes what many see as the defining trip.

Man City away could be the hinge of the season. Arsenal have already lost that first final to them. They have felt their chase despite numerous falters. This is their chance to rewrite the script, or reinforce it.

Back at the Emirates, Newcastle arrive with urgency. Chasing European football, aggressive, physical, and capable of turning big games chaotic. It’s unlikely to be a stroll.

Fulham at home is just as unpredictable with Marco Silva’s team often thriving against the big boys. Then comes West Ham away which could be even worse. Almost certainly still battling against relegation and yet another London rivalry to add spice.

Home to Burnley then away to Crystal Palace feels like the kind of season enders you’d want. But depending on the points difference at the top by then, and potentially UCL challenges, the nerves could be jangling.

What are Man City’s final games?

Manchester City’s schedule does not offer many quiet afternoons, although Real Madrid put paid to any European clutter.

Chelsea away, that Arsenal clash at home, Everton away, Aston Villa at home. There is no let off in higher ranked opponents there. Even games that look more routine (Burnley, Brentford and Bournemouth the others) carry weight because City are chasing, not leading. Every game is effectively a must-win, with the need for Arteta’s men to slip up.

Who will win the 2025/26 Premier League?

Few would bet against Arsenal finally sliding across to the center of the soccer church from their more familiar bridesmaid position given how things stand. But, it’s Arsenal. And it’s City.

Guardiola and several of his stars know what it’s like to win the title. Arteta, as manager, and his talented collective does not. Clearly the Londoners’ objective is to gain that experience and push on next season with it for more glory, but performances over recent months suggest it’s unlikely to be a procession.

And for all neutrals out there, that’s just what is desired...
