Marco Asensio was chosen to attend the media in Balexert, Servette’s training complex, two days ahead of Spain’s Nations League meeting with Switzerland. The 26-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract with Real Madrid, which will run out in June 2023. He is weighing up his options - which include leaving as a free agent but what is clear is that he wants to be in control of his own future.

Do you think your game has suffered as a result of a lack of playing time?

Regular playing time is something that I really want to have over the next few years. Having confidence and playing regularly is very important for me. I have had spells of that at Madrid this season. It’s something which I look for and need.

Luis Enrique said that you were surprised to be called up.

I always feel I am capable of being with the national team and I’m happy to be here. The atmosphere is good and it’s great to be with my team mates. I’ll need to work to the max.

Have you been affected by the issues concerning the Federation?

I am not really aware of what’s going on on the outside. I’ve been quite busy, I’ve just proposed to my girlfriend so I am a bit out of the loop. I’m focused on what’s going on here, so that we can get the results we want.

You played 24 games and scored 12 goals last season. Do you think you can gain more continuity with Madrid? When will you know more about your future?

The answer to that is yes. My future... right now I am focused on the national team. Once this has finished we can talk about things.

But the situation is quite clear. You must know that Madrid will either renew your contract or sell you because they won’t let you leave on a free transfer.

There are three possible outcomes. There is also the possibility of me staying and seeing out the rest of my contract...

Whose methods do you like most, Ancelotti’s or Luis Enrique’s?

I like both a lot. Carlo has experience, he is a very wise coach. Luis Enrique is a very good coach, who has achieved a lot in football. He knows how to get his message across to the players.

A lack of regular playing time at Madrid, could affect your chances of going to the World Cup. Will that have any bearing on your decision?

A lot of things could have an influence. I don’t know if it will have anything to do with it but players always want to be with the national team.

Does it annoy you when you see players like Gnabry and Gabriel Jesús linked to Real Madrid?

Rumours are a part of football. Players will always be linked and we are used to rumours coming out. It’s something we have to live with.
