Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona: UCL game preview
In last week’s first leg in Barcelona, Julián Álvarez curled in a fabulous free-kick for Atlético, before Alexander Sorloth’s striker’s finish wrapped up a 2-0 victory for the visitors. The triumph was Diego Simeone’s first at Camp Nou in nearly a decade and a half as Atleti’s head coach.
Barça, who had defender Pau Cubarsí sent off in the first half, were incensed by the display of referee István Kovács; indeed, the club sent a formal complaint to UEFA, European soccer’s governing body. The Catalans were particularly angered by an incident in which Atlético defender Marc Pubill handled inside his penalty box, only for the officials to deem the ball not yet in play.
First-leg defeat leaves Barça, who earned a 2-1 LaLiga win at the Estadio Metropolitano 10 days ago, in grave danger of completing a hattrick of Champions League exits at the hands of Atlético. The clubs’ two previous knockout-phase ties, in the 2013/14 and 2015/16 last eight, both saw Simeone’s men advance (and on each occasion, Los Colchoneros went on to reach the final).
