Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid: UCL as it happened
That's all, folks!
Thanks for tuning in to a fascinating game in Barcelona. Make sure to come back for the second legs next week!
Joe
Araujo post-game:
We came out strong in the second half, we had the ball but we couldn't score.
We're sad but hopeful of the comeback in the next game. This team can do it, we have the capacity to come back.
It's tough at their place, but we've got good players with a lot of talent and personality.
The red conditioned the game a lot, we had chances and we could've scored. Had we, the game would have changed. It wasn't what we wanted, but we go into the second leg with everything.
We have injured players and some were tired at the end, but we're prepared and have to be postive.
Full-time thoughts:
It's safe to say that nobody saw this result coming, even if we already knew that Atlético could give Barcelona a good game and put them up against it on their day.
The away side performed perfectly on the night, managing to close off the spaces that Barcelona love to exploit, doubling up on Lamine Yamal, and attacking in the correct way and in the correct moments.
While the red card conditioned things, as Araujo said in the post-game interview, Barcelona lacked that incisive touch in the final third and failed to really test Musso and Atlético Madrid's defensive wall.
They take a two-goal lead back to Madrid, and if the previous encounters between these two sides are anything to go by, we're in for a seriously entertaining second leg!
Griezmann post-game:
We had our best game on the ball, we still have things to learn and improve, but we're happy, even if there's a long way to go.
There are still 90 minutes or more to go, we've got our feet on the ground.
Hopefully Julián can take us to the final, he was amazing.
FULL-TIME!
ATLÉTICO MADRID TAKE A TWO-GOAL LEAD BACK TO MADRID
OVER! Olmo with what might be the final act of the night. A flash counter from Barcelona but the shot is poor and flies into the stand behind the goal.
Ah, Lamine Yamal's clipped cross is shocking, his first poor touch of the night, and it floats over the far post and out.
Barcelona win a free-kick in the central/left channel, just outside the box, after Olmo is fouled.
3 added minutes.
Ferrancan't reach the cross from Balde and wants a penalty for presumably feeling he was shoved in the back by Molina. But this referee is not for budging, and he's jogging away as I type.
Into the final minute of normal time.
Barcelona are tap, tap, tapping the ball from right to left, and left to right. But they're still 50 yards from goal and the red and white shirts are following their every move.
Another Barcelona change:
OFF: Cancelo
ON: Balde
One, two, three, four, five, six. That's how many players Lamine Yamal just skipped past inside the box before running out of space and being forced off the ball by Musso. What a wonderful player.
To be fair to the crowd, they haven't stopped all night.
A great ball from Baena finds Sørloth breaking in behind, but Eric's long spider leg reaches down to swipe the ball away from the forward as he burns towards goal like a runaway iceberg.
Time is running out for Barcelona, who haven't really been able to create what I'd label as a clear-cut chance.
More Atleti changes:
OFF: Griezmann, Giuliano
ON: Almada, Nico González
SAVE! Lamine Yamal, with the ball under his feet and in an impossible position to wiggle out of, manages to crack a shot into the palms of Musso from inside the box!
SAVE! Cancelo wins the ball back high up the pitch, skips past two challenges inside the box, and fires off a shot at the near post that is saved by Musso!
Baena, and I can't stress this enough, has given Atlético the perfect mixture of bite and fresh air on the ball. He's pulling the strings the moment they step over halfway and never shies away from chasing down an opponent.
Fifteen minutes to go of normal time, and Barcelona have a mountain to climb.
And Araujo almost scores with his first touch! Lamine Yamal's deep corner flashes past the far post, taking some of Ronald's fluffy hair with it.
Flick switches it up:
OFF: Rashford, Kounde
ON: Araujo, Ferran
Back underway.
It's as simple as it is beautiful. Space opens up on the left for Ruggeri, who smashes in a low cross for Sørtloth to latch onto and poke past Joan García to plunge Barcelona deeper into this horror story!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!
SØRLOTH DOUBLES ATLÉTICO'S LEAD
Twenty minutes to go; Atleti look comfortable with the way things are going.
Sørlothheads away Rashford's long-range free-kick and Barcelona are struggling to create here.
Baena has certainly helped Atlético to find some more touches on the ball, and they're managing to push Barcelona back into their own half.
Gavi goes into the referee's book for the clearest of shirt pulls, this time on Griezmann.
Fermín plays inside to Olmo, who fires a driven ball behind Atleti's back line towards Rashford, but he's already made a run in the other direction and the away team sweep up.
Baena gets a yellow card for a foul on Olmo.
Giuliano and Sørloth work the ball well down the right as Barcelona stand off the pair of attackers before eventually jumping in inside the box and stopped the striker's shot.
Baena has swapped out for Koke, but now we've got a bit of an improvised 4-3-3 with Griezmann as a playmaker, Sørloth up top, and Julián on the left.
Simeone makes changes:
OFF: Lookman, Koke
ON: Baena, Sørloth
CLOSE! Rashford's corner meets Gavi's flicked header and flashes through the crowd, surprising both Kounde and Olmo, who only need to tap the ball into the empty net.
Barcelona have had a lot of frustrated possession this half, which seems to be rubbing off onto the fans.
The Barcelona crowd are going wild at a potential penalty that hasn't been given.
The goalkeeper passed the ball to his centre-back at what they saw as the goal kick being taken. However, Pubill put his hand on the ball and officially restarted the play.
They want a penalty. They're not getting one.
Atleti scramble away the subsequent corner that is headed back across goal by Kounde.
SAVED! Musso got a strong hand to the dipping effort.
Rashford steps up...
Lamine Yamal is brought down on the very spot where Julián scored at the end of the first half. Free-kick.
SIDE NETTING. Lamine Yamal is going to make a name for himself for those outside-of-the-boot passes, with another one landing behind the Atleti defence and at the feet of Rashford. The angle is tight by the time the winger can get a shot away, and it crashes into the side of Musso's goal.
Barcelona are keeping the ball and giving the new faces plenty of early touches.
Eric has moved into defence, with Fermín on the left and Rashford up front.
Second half underway!
Barça get us going.
Barcelona changes:
OFF: Lewandowski, Pedri
ON: Fermín, Gavi
Pedri and Lewandowski have not come out for the second half.
What will Flick do?
The Barcelona coach won't change his style, but he's going to be forced into changing players. Araujo seems like the most likely replacement, with Lewandowski perhaps the player to make way, moving Olmo into a false-9 position. I just struggle to see Flick moving away from 3 midfielders, but it might well happen and would be a statement of intent from the manager.
In the other quarter-final, PSG are a goal up against Liverpool thanks to a sublime strike from Doué that might just match Julián's golazo in terms of making me all fizzy inside.
Half-time thoughts:
Well, that was an disastrous ending to the half for FC Barcelona, who have not been bad at all throughout. They can be somewhat happy as they've created plenty, found the free man on numerous occasions, and at times dragged Atleti around like a rag doll.
Having said that, the away side have provided a constant threat on both wings and now find themselves a man and a goal up, with 45 minutes to go in the first leg.
Half-time in Cataluña!
Atlético Madrid head into the dressing room a goal and a man up on Barcelona.
Two balls are on the pitch, and Cancelo jogs over to kick one of them out. It cannons off the advertising board and ends up more on the pitch than its original position.
SAVE. Lewandowski hits a shot while spinning inside the box. Easily caught by Musso.
Pubill fouls Lewandowski and is given a yellow. He'll miss the second leg.
Back underway and we've got 4 added minutes.
He lifts the ball up and over the wall and it drops into the top corner or Joan García's net. Stunning.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL
JULIÁN ÁLVAREZ SENDS THE FREE-KICK INTO THE TOP CORNER!
WHAT A SENSATIONAL GOAL!!!
Barcelona are down to 10 and Atlético have a free-kick on the edge of the box.
CUBARSÍ RED CARD
The referee looks in his little book for the red, can't find it, and then goes into his top pocket where he pulls out the red card!
The referee is going to the screen!
VAR have called him over for a possible red card challenge.
Yellow for Cubarsí and that could well have been a red. Giuliano broke away behind the Barcelona defence after a delightful ball was played over the top. The defender brought down the attacker on the edge of the box and to be honest, there is a lot of confusion as to why that's not a red.
Five to go of normal time.
Ouch. Koke kicks Lamine Yamal's leg in a sloppy challenge and once again, the midfielder gets away without what could easily be a second booking.
A top defensive header from Cubarsí stops Griezmann from breaking away and latching onto Musso's long ball from the back.
A very promising Atlético move ends with a Giuliano cross aimed for the Artemis II crew.
Some solid moments from Barcelona now, with Rashford at the heart of things on the left wing. Corner to the homeside after more nice work.
Le Normand spoons away a low cross from Rashford that was made possible by a sublime Cancelo run down the wing.
WIDE. Gerard Martín tries his luck from range and watches his shot fizz past the post. Moments before, Lamine Yamal had skipped past two challenges inside the box and had his shot blocked by a defender.
Koke is booked for a late challenge on Olmo.
OFF: Hancko
ON: Pubill
Marc Pubill is coming on for Hancko.
HUGE SAVE! Wow. Rashford connects with a looping cross towards the far post and Musso sticks out a huge palm to stop the ball from creeping in from a tight angle.
Back underway. Atleti down to 10 for now.
Play is set to carry on, with Hancko receiving treatment on the sidelines.
Pedri has been given a yellow card, and I'm not quite sure why.
Before that, Molina did well to meet a cross from the right and stop Lewandowski from heading towards goal.
Hancko is down and has asked for medical assistance.
A couple of times now, Atlético have lost the ball while trying to attack Barcelona and move the ball across halfway. Griezmann, Julián, and Lookman all appear quite isolated against Barcelona's back line.
Finally, the referee rummages in his pocket and finds his whistle, blowing for a foul by Cancelo on Giuliano. That pair are having a real battle on the far side of the pitch tonight.
Pedri misplaces a pass (yes, really) and Atlético get the ball back after a long spell of watching Barcelona probe their mid-block.
Now it's Llorente's turn to rage at afoul that isn't given by the referee, who's keen to let the game flow. Toto, I have a feeling we're not in LaLiga anymore.
Cancelo can't believe his eyes as the referee calls a foul against him after he slams into Le Normand, bringing him to ground. I'm not sure if Cancelo has watched any football over the past few years, but the last time that wasn't a foul was the 1970 FA Cup final.
Gooooaaal - offside!
Lamine Yamal squirms away down the right as the ball is played through the lines by Pedri. He squares to Rashford who taps in, but the linesman's flag is already pointing towards the sky. Offside.
Calls for a penalty to Atlético Madrid after Nahuel Molina's weak effort from range bounces onto the arm of a defender. Referee says no.
Gasps from crowd as Le Normand stops Rashford in his tracks and it's just in time: the Englishman had skipped past Molina on the wing and made his way into the box, ready to fire at goal.
Griezmann gets a shot away after Llorente crossed in from the right, but Lookman had handled it in the buildup. Free-kick to Barcelona in their own area.
WIDE! A delightful move from Barcelona switches from left to right, and Eric's cross lands at the feet of Rashford, all alone inside the box, who watches his volley bounce agonisingly wide of the far post.
Giuliano Simeone can't direct his shot on target and it rolls wide of Joan García's goal. It's from a tight angle, admittedly, but he might have been better getting his head up and looking for a teammate to cross to.
I get the feeling that Lamine Yamal enjoys playing with Rashford: he's constantly looking for his opposite winger every time he cuts inside from the right.
SAVE. João Cancelo skips inside past Giuliano and pops off a low shot into Musso's grasp.
Koke escapes an early booking after a very late challenge on Olmo, who is rolling around erratically like an escaped marble on a trampoline.
Lamine Yamal can't find Rashford on the left as Barcelona break away with the winger following a sloppy loss of possession by the rojiblancos on halfway. The away side break and win a corner.
CHANCE. Julián's shot is saved by Joan García inside the box after the forward left a number of blaugrana shirts for dead with a sublime spin that took everyone by surprise.
Griezmann and Lookman don't read Koke's sly pass down the left side of the pitch and Cubarsí sweeps up easily. A decent chance for Atleti there to hit back at Barça, who have started well.
SAVE. Barcelona win the ball high up the pitch and Rashford sends a stinging shot at Musso, who parries away.
Barcelona are keeping the ball in the Atlético half, with all 10 outfield players well past the halfway line.
Lookman loses his boot after leading Atleti's high press but Barça break it with Rashford ending the move, firing a low shot from distance into the grasp of Musso.
Hansi Flick with some delightful Nike sneakers on the touchline. Almost as trendy as Vincent Kompany.
And we're off!
Atlético Madrid get us going, kicking from right to left.
Captain check:
Pedri is wearing the captain's armband for the bluagrana; Koke obviously has the captaincy for los colchoneros.
A final reminder of the XIs:
BARCELONA
Joan García; Kounde, Gerard, Cubarsí, Cancelo; Eric, Pedri, Olmo; Rashford, Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal
ATLÉTICO MADRID
Musso; Ruggeri, Hancko, Le Normand, Molina; Llorente, Koke; Lookman, Griezmann, Giuliano; Álvarez
The Champions League anthem rings out around the stadium
And the huge flappy ball is flapping in the centre circle.
Here they come!
What a noise inside Camp Nou!
The players are in the tunnel!
The crowd are waiting for the players to emerge!
Aitana at Camp Nou
The Barcelona Femení midfielder is present at Spotify Camp Nou for the game today, just a short time after seeing her side progress to the semi-finals of the UEFA Women's Champions League at the same venue.
Teams head down the tunnel
The near 60,000 capacity crowd have just given their team a huge round of applause as Barça head down the tunnel for the final team talk before kick-off.
To be clear, the stadium is expected to be full, it's just some are still finishing off drinks and sandwiches outside the ground.
Reminder of the starting XIs:
BARCELONA
Joan García; Kounde, Gerard, Cubarsí, Cancelo; Eric, Pedri, Olmo; Rashford, Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal
ATLÉTICO MADRID
Musso; Ruggeri, Hancko, Le Normand, Molina; Llorente, Koke; Lookman, Griezmann, Giuliano; Álvarez
Does this game matter more to Atlético?
There are a lot of emotions flying around the Spanish capital at the moment if you're wearing red and white: Griezmann is leaving for the US at the end of the season, the Champions League dream is still alive, and there's a Copa del Rey final to play, too.
What I didn't mention was LaLiga, which sees Atleti in 4th place with a 19-point gap to Barcelona at the top. Their race for the league trophy is over, meaning all of their focus is firmly on the two cup competitions.
Can they dare to dream? No, not in a Tottenham Hotspur way, of course.
Stones thrown at Atlético Madrid bus
Here's the footage of the Atleti bus arriving at Spotify Camp Nou - and being welcomed by a hail of stones and empty cans of zesty drinks of various brands.
Hansi Flick pre-game press conference:
It's true that on Saturday [the 2-1 win at Atlético in La Liga] a lot of their players rested but they were still very good. They like to defend deep and it's not easy scoring twice at Atlético. I hope the physical aspect is not decisive.
Our fans will be very important. I have the feeling that there is a great connection with the supporters and they know when they have to help us.
Everyone has to be committed in defence. We have to be compact, well positioned and help each other. We have to attack and defend together.
We have to play our way. If we don't and we don't press then it's easy for our opponents to attack the space.
Barcelona and Atlético Madrid players enter the pitch
First a cheer, then a jeer as Barcelona's squad is followed out of the tunnel by the red and white training shirts of their opponents who begin their pre-game warmup routine with some stretching.
As Barça chase a spot in the Champions League semifinals, Hansi Flick's team will have to do without Raphinha.
The 29-year-old picked up the muscle issue while on international duty, limping out of Brazil’s friendly defeat to France on March 26.
Yellow card watch
Lamine Yamal, Gerard Martín, Fermín López and Marc Casadó would miss the second leg were they to be booked today by the referee, but things are worse for Atlético.
They have a total of 7 players walking the invisible tightrope during the game, with all of Le Normand, Lenglet, Llorente, Pubill, Ruggeri, Giuliano y Baena one booking away from missing the return leg in the Spanish capital.
Simeone pre-game interview:
We can't change a lot, we both have a defined style and we're both going with what we have.
It's not a problem of just today, [the stone throwing at the Atlético team bus] is a problem of the society.
Watch out, Cholo!
Diego Pablo Simeone is also one yellow card away from missing the second leg, so he'd do well to keep his hands in his pockets throughout the game tonight.
Weather check!
Spring is a very unpredictable time in Spain, and the east coast is no different. At present, temperatures are bobbing around 17ºC/63ºF, with the sun currently out and shining.
Thankfully we're not expecting anyrain, like the storm I was caught in yesterday ahead of the game at the Bernabéu.
Robin Le Normand to Spanish TV:
I like to have a walk around before the game and check out the stadium.
Griezmann has shown the legends that they are. It's a shame Griezmann is going, but he deserves to choose what he wants to do, even if we wanted him to do something different.
We're excited for the end of the season, and we're going to go for it.
It's a tough game tonight, but they think the same. You always have to put in a lot of energy, and they'll make it difficult, but we'll do the same.
I used to prefer a target man to play against, but today strikers can do everything so we have all learned how to adapt to the changes.
Pedri to Spanish TV:
I try to be calm before games, our fans help us and the atmosphere will be incredible tonight.
Last time we tried to come back from 4 goals down, and hopefully today we can have the same game, it would be great.
Lamine Yamal is still young, everyone wants him to be the difference. When he's on the wing, he attracts other players, which helps us a lot. He brings a lot and will do for a long time.
We know each other well between the two teams. You know what they'll bring, but there's always that doubt and that feeling of what they might do.
We're really excited to keep going and I'm excited to play, to be on the pitch and go for it all.
As you'll see from the photo above, the Barcelona team bus has just parked up in its bay at Spotify Camp Nou. The weather is a lot better than it was in Madrid last night, that's for sure.

JESUS ALVAREZ ORIHUELA / DIARIO AS
Barça vs Atleti: I've seen this before
You’re not going mad if you get déjà vu ahead of the game today, as these two teams have played each other plenty over the past weeks and months.
Barcelona and Atlético went head to head in the Copa del Rey earlier in the year, with the Madrid side winning over two legs following a 4-0 thumping of the Catalans in the first leg at the Metropolitano. Despite a Barcelona comeback attempt that got them one goal from a draw, it was not enough, and Simeone made it to the final.
Then there was the recent league game, which took place in the previous match day. Barcelona were the visitors to the Atlético fortress, and they managed a 1-2 win thanks to a late Lewandowksi goal that extended their lead over Real Madrid.
ATLÉTICO MADRID XI!
Le Normand partners Hancko in the centre of defence, as Llorente takes up a role in midfield. Lookman starts, as does Julián, alongside Grizi.
Nice to see we're going to have two home strips on show
None of your electric green away kits or traffic cone orange shorts, just as-you-were home strips for both sides. Delightful. That's made my day.
What happened yesterday?
Yesterday was a typically wild Champions League night, with two crazy games on offer. Real Madrid fought back to a 1-2 defeat against a brilliant Bayern Munich, while a late Arsenal goal gave them a huge advantage going into the second leg in London.
BARCELONA XI IN!
Cancelo starts at full-back, with Olmo, Pedri and Eric making up the midfield. Rashford partners Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal up top.
On the stadium...
Slowly but surely, the Spotify Camp Nou is getting back to its best, with the capacity increasing with every game week. The singing section is also active again and they're loud, bringing a new dimension to Barcelona games that have suffered from a lack of fizz in a number of stadiums since the renovations began.
We're not entirely sure about Barcelona's starting XI for the game tonight in the Champions League, but given the information we have, we sure can take a good stab what questions might be floating around Hansi Flick's mind ahead of submitting the team sheet to UEFA.
Here's how things look at Spotify Camp Nou ahead of kick-off
The calm before the storm...

CHEMA DIAZ / DIARIO AS
Who's the ref?
Istvan Kovacs is the man with the whistle tonight. The Romanian is a domestic league legend, with close to 300 games under his belt and almost half a century of Champions League fixtures.
He’s also taken charge of games in the Nations League, as well as a number of games over in Saudi Arabia.
Anyway, he's on duty, so here's a nice photo of him having a stretch.
Team news: Atlético Madrid
As for the away side, they're without first choice goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who will be replaced by Musso. Pablo Barrios and Johnny Cardoso are also out, meaning Simeone will have to jiggle around his midfield in order to find some balance. Josema Giménez is also out of the game.
Team news: FC Barcelona
A number of huge names are missing today and none are more significant than that of Raphinha. The former Leeds United winger is out with a muscle injury that will see him sit out of a number of high-profile games as we approach the start of the season's final stage.
Added to Raphinha’s physical issues are those of Frenkie de Jong, who is unavailable today. Nor is Andreas Christensen, who is out along with Marc Bernal.
Welcome!
Hello and welcome to the second night of our UEFA Champions League quarter-final coverage at AS USA, where we've got a jam-packed schedule of drama ahead.
Barcelona host Atlético Madrid in a game we’ve seen a few times already this season, and I’m delighted to say they’ve all been crackers.
It’s Joe on duty tonight, and I’ll be guiding you through the buildup, the game itself, and all the fallout in Cataluña.
