Balogun breaks the silence: “I want to apologize...”
The USMNT forward, embroiled in controversy after his suspension was lifted for the Belgium match, has spoken out after the team’s World Cup elimination.
Team USA’s World Cup dream came to a crashing halt after a 4–1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16 — a match overshadowed by a political storm involving President Donald Trump, FIFA, and star striker Folarin Balogun.
A turbulent buildup, then a brutal exit
Before the match even kicked off, the U.S. camp was rocked by controversy. After Trump personally contacted FIFA, president Gianni Infantino overturned Balogun’s suspension from the previous round against Bosnia, clearing him to play. The decision drew global attention — and plenty of criticism.

Balogun breaks his silence
Two days after the elimination, Balogun — the Monaco striker and Team USA’s top scorer at the tournament with three goals — addressed fans on social media. His message was emotional, reflective, and determined:
“My debut World Cup… it hurts to wait 4 years to compete at the highest level our sport has to offer. I want to say sorry to our fans it was not good enough when it mattered most and we let you down
“Soccer in America will only become bigger the belief, the talent, and the passion is continually growing and I know the best days are in front of us, the future belongs to those who never stop believing, this moment will fuel us.
“We will be back Why not us? For the nation. For the flag”.
