Who is François Letexier?
Elfath was born in Bédée, Brittany on April 23, 1989. He made his Ligue 1 refereeing debut in January 2016, overseeing the Week 22 game between Montpellier and Caen - the first of eight games he would officiate in his first season.
In 2017, Letexier gained his FIFA badge. He is also a UEFA elite category referee, having refereed in all of the major tournaments at club and international level.
Among the major games he has refereed are the 2021 Europa League final between Villarreal and Manchester United, the the 2023 UEFA Super Cup between Manchester City and Sevilla and the Euro 2024 final between Spain and England. He was designated to oversee three games at last years FIFA Club World Cup, including the semi-final between Fluminense and Chelsea.
Has Letexier ever been involved in controversy?
Just once. In the Week 12 Ligue 1 match between Nice and Nantes on October 19 2022, he decided (after a VAR review) not to award a penalty to the visitors when the ball struck both of Mattia Viti’s arms inside the six-yard box. However, he did point to the spot for a borderline handball in stoppage time - allowing the hosts to level the match. During the game he handed out seven yellow cards and sent two Nantes players off.
At the current World Cup Letexier has issued four yellow cards in both of the matches he has officiated so far but hasn’t sent anyone for an early bath or blown for a penalty.
