Barcelona beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano in the Champions League quarter-final second leg, but were eliminated 3-2 on aggregate after Eric García was sent off in the 76th minute following a VAR review.
One of the defining moments of the night came midway through the second half, when García brought down Alexander Sørloth as the Atlético forward raced through on goal toward Joan García’s net. With Sørloth adjudged to be onside, referee Clément Turpin was instructed to review the incident on the pitchside monitor before showing the Barcelona defender a straight red card.

AS and Cadena SER referee analyst Eduardo Iturralde González supported the decision, arguing that the dismissal was correct. “Looking at the replay, for me it’s more of a red than a yellow. It’s a red, and VAR has to intervene,” he said, adding that Barcelona must reflect on why similar situations arose across both legs of the tie, with Cubarsí getting his marching orders in the first leg in a similar play.
