Bayern Munich - PSG out to continue ‘winning’ run in European competition

There’s a rematch of the 2019/20 Champions League final on Tuesday, a fixture which holds a strange distinction in European competition.

One of two Champions League final rematches on the schedule for this week, Bayern Munich’s clash with Paris Saint-Germain brings together two genuine European heavyweights.

Both teams are dominant domestically - having each won three of the last four league titles - but have fallen just short of Champions League success in recent years. Bayern and PSG were the defeated semi-finalists in last year’s competition, losing out to Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, respectively.

Games between Bayern and PSG always attract the eyes of the world and rarely disappoint. The two teams have met 13 times previously, without a single draw across those games. For both teams, this is their most-played European fixture which has always ended with a winner.

Bayern have won the last three meetings between the two but boss Vincent Kompany is not underestimating the Ligue 1 side ahead of Tuesday’s game.

We are playing against one of the big clubs in Europe. They have a lot of individual quality and a very good coach. Both teams will want to win. We are playing at home and this match is of utmost importance to us,” Kompany said on Monday

“[PSG have] a squad with incredible talent. The spaces between the lines are never big, the pressing is very aggressive and good. When they have the ball, they have a clear attacking approach. As a team, they are really very good.”

Bayern have made an undefeated start in the Bundesliga under Kompany but have fared less well in the Champions League. The German giants have lost two of their opening four UCL games of 2024/25, falling to Aston Villa and Barcelona and leaving themselves with work to do to ensure qualification.
