Update:
A flurry of late action suggested it was a contest, but the Germans had the Red Devils where they wanted them for much of the night.

Bayern Munich vs Manchester United: Champions League as it happened

Full time: Bayern Munich 4-3 Manchester United

A strange, strange game in Munich, as Bayern ultimately do just enough to hold off Manchester United. As much as 2-0 flattered the hosts in the first half, it is utterly bizarre to think that the Premier League giants won the second period 3-2, such was their inferiority.

In reality, there wasn’t a great deal to choose between the teams in the first half, which was dominated by Onana’s howling mistake to gift Sané the opening goal. United, who had been marginally the better side up until that point and were only denied the breakthrough by a brilliant tackle from Davies, were then further punished by a quick-fire second for Gnabry.

The feeling was that Bayern had been playing within themselves and were somewhat off-colour, whereas United appeared to have little more to give.

The second half reflected that in every way other than the scoreline. Hojlund scored his first goal for the English club immediately after the restart but Ten Hag’s side were immediately brought back down to earth when Eriksen was punished for handball in the box, with Kane dispatching the penalty.

From then on, United appeared to be down and out, and Bayern looked by far the more likely to kill their opponents off than be pegged back again. Onana partly redeemed himself by making a string of saves, and Casemiro set up a grandstand finale by prodding home with a couple of minutes left.

Were Bayern just teasing The Red Devils? It appeared so as, once again within minutes, they raced up the other end and re-established their two-goal lead thanks to Tel’s emphatic finish. Incredibly enough, Casemiro still had time to head in a third for the visitors, but it proved to be the last action of the game, which the Germans deservedly won.

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag: "A lot is going against us"

"We're disappointed because we should stay in the game. If you score three goals at Bayern Munich, you have to take a point.

"We are in a period, a lot is going against us. We have to make our own luck. We've played great teams in the last three games."

On Andre Onana taking responsibility for his mistake: "It's good he's doing that but it's about the team. Mistakes are being made but you have to bounce back as a team. If one player makes a mistake, it's done, it's gone. We have to believe as a team that we can always bounce back. Tonight we showed it."

On Saturday's game with Burnley: "Every game is important. Every game is huge. We have to make our own luck. Nobody can help you.

"Stay in the game and don't allow the opponent to score a goal. it's not about one mistake. It was too easy for the player to have the shot."

On how to change things: "We, the team, me included, only we can do it. It's in our hands, nobody else."

Erik Ten Hag, Manchester United manager, speaking to TNT Sports

Harry Kane "excited for what's to come" after first Champions League goal for Bayern

"It was a crazy finish. For the majority of the game we controlled it and dictated the tempo. We just lost a bit of concentration in the last five minutes. Thankfully we held onto the lead.

On his start in Germany: "It's been nice. It's always great to score. Always room for improvement. It's a great night tonight. We're building. We can enjoy this."

On his new team-mates: "As a striker I know I'll get chances. It's exciting to play with them. We're still getting to know each other. I'm excited for what's to come".

"Whenever there's a big price tag there's a big expectation and you want to repay the club who have put faith in you."

On United: "They are going through a difficult spell with injuries. They have a lot of talent - you saw that in the last five minutes. Overall I'm not too worried about them, I'm more focused on myself."

Harry Kane, Bayern Munich striker, speaking to TNT Sports

Who do Bayern and Manchester United play next?

Four wins and a draw in five competitive games now for Bayern, whose next Champions League game is at Copenhagen on Tuesday 3 October.

United, meanwhile, have lost three games in a row and four of their last five in all competitions. They host Galatasaray next on the same night.

United's Onana keen to explain himself

United's Onana keen to explain himself

As far as I gather, United goalkeeper André Onana wanted to speak to the media after the game following his crucial mistake for the first goal. An absolute howler, it has to be said, but fair play to him for fronting up.

United goalkeeper André Onana discusses mistake against Bayern

"It's difficult. We started very good. After my mistake we lost control of the game. It's a difficult situation for us, for me.

"The team were one down because of that mistake. I have to learn from it and be strong. I'm happy with the comeback of the team.

"I have a lot to prove. My start in Manchester hasn't been so good, not how I want. This was one of my worst games. We have big ambition.

"It's a tough time. We have to be together and work hard."

André Onana, Manchester United goalkeeper, speaking to TNT Sports

What a bizarre game of soccer! Bayern run out worthy winners.

GOOOOOOOOAAAAAL UNITED! CASEMIRO!

Too little, too late, surely?!

as.com

You had the feeling that Bayern could score again if they really wanted to and that's exactly what happened.

Just moments after Tel crosses for Müller to hit the post, he takes down Kimmich's lofted pass and smashes high past Onana.

There's no coming back from that.

GOOOOOOAAAAAAAL BAYERN! TEL!

Forget it, game well and truly over!

Four minutes of added time.

as.com

It would be incredible if The Red Devils got something out of this game. For 20 minutes, it's looked as if they've mentally been on the plane back to Manchetser.

as.com

It starts with absolutely superb work from Martial out on the right, followed by some neat passing around the edge of the Bayern box. Casemiro runs into the area, gets the break of the ball and prods beyond Ulreich.

GAME ON!

GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL UNITED! CASEMIRO!

Where did that come from?!

Sané and Kane off, Thomas Müller and Tel come on. Old and young.

Bayern in total control. I'd suggest they haven't got anywhere near top gear, either.

as.com
82

Another duel between Choupo-Moting and Onana, with the goalkeeper again coming out on top. Held at the first attempt by the United stopper.

as.com
81

A big chance squandered for United! McTominary does brilliantly to rob Goretzka deep in Bayern territory and attempts a one-two with Martial, but slips just as he goes to collect it. He could've got a shot away otherwise.

as.com
MNU

Martial and Garnacho replace Hojlund and Pellistri.

as.com

United are caught between hoping they can somehow sneak a goal and not receiving a thumping. They're closer to the latter than the former, I'd say.

as.com
79

Bayern are going to score again here. This time Sané works it to Coman, whose low shot is blocked by Onana.

as.com
77

Space at the edge of the box for Choupo-Moting, who curls one goalwards, only to be denied by flying compatriot Onana!

as.com
76

Bayern doing all the running at the moment with Laimer somehow managing to get past Reguilon out on the right. The full-back has several players to pick out in the middle but can only find a zebra shirt. The Germans will be back for more, though.

as.com
BAY

Musiala given huge ovation

Musiala has been very impressive in the Bayern midfield and attack but is given a rest for the final stages. Choupo-Moting on in his place.

as.com
73

I really can't see where a United goal could come from here. Bayern looking more likely to add another.

as.com

United's defensive woes continue

Erik Ten Hag's side had the second best defensive record in the Premier League last season. Let's just say they've made a slow start in that department this term.

as.com
70

A bit of possession for United in the last couple of minutes but not much of a threat going forward. 20 minutes to change that!

as.com
MNU

Eriksen off, McTominay on. The Scot has been in superb goalscoring form for his country, United could do with him transferring that form to club soccer.

as.com

Goretska and Martínez are first in the book for a disagreement, shall we say?

as.com
66

Bayern are looking considerably more dangerous at the moment. Not much of a spark from United, if any.

as.com
63

Another save from Onana but a much less convincing one this time. Sané's dipping shot from outside the box moves in the air and the United keeper beats it away uncomfortably, thankfully to Lindelof, who clears the danger.

as.com
BAY

Coman replaces Gnabry for the hosts.

as.com
61

Onana saves from Kane!

Better from Onana as Kane lines one up from a tight angle. The Nigerian should've have been beaten at his near post there though.

as.com
58

United huffing and puffing to get back into it and Reguilon flashes a first-time shot well wide from Rashford's cut-back!

as.com
57

That would've been delightful. Kane brilliantly disguises a defence-splitting pass for Sané but Dalot just gets to it first and clears.

as.com

Five goals in five games for Harry Kane for Bayern

Kane has picked up where he left off with Spurs in England. That's five in five for the 30-year-old, with a few assists thrown in there for good measure.

as.com
54

Sané hits the post!

Musiala has been at the heart of everything good for Bayern and picks out a superb pass for Sané, who beats Onana but sees his shot cannon back off the post!

as.com

Manchester United were back within a goal of Bayern for around 60 seconds (of playing time).

as.com

A chance for Onana to make amends...but he didn't.

No goalkeeper was saving that. Right in the corner!

53

GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL BAYERN! KANE!

Textbook from the England captain!

as.com
51

PENALTY FOR BAYERN!

Oh dear (for United). VAR judges Eriksen to have handled the ball in the box and Kane is getting ready...

as.com
50

Musiala almost restore two-goal lead immediately!

Bayern race up the other end and Musiala makes space for a shot, which is deflected just wide!

as.com

A bit messy from Bayern's point of view, with Casemiro picking up a loose ball on the edge of the box and lofting it to Rashford, who tees up Hojlund. The Dane's strike takes a slight deflection and trundles past Ulerich!

GAME ON!

as.com
49

GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL UNITED!

Goals do win games though!

as.com
48

One of the most effortless nutmegs I've never seen from Rashford on Laimer. Nutmegs don't win games though, do they?

as.com
46

As was the case in the first half, United have started the second fairly well and are attacking almost exclusively down the left. Poor Dalot and Pellistri have barely had a kick so far.

as.com

Second half underway in Munich!

United get us going again at Allianz Arena.

as.com

The players are on their way back out for more! What have United and Ten Hag got up their collective zebra-patterend sleeves?

as.com

Bayern's marginal gains give them half-time lead

Bayern came into the first half more after a sluggish start, although a 2-0 lead is a bit flattering, it has to be said.

Is there any hope for United in the second half? I'm struggling to see a comeback being on the cards, but I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again!

as.com

Half time: Bayern Munich 2-0 Manchester United

That first half has absolutely flown past, even though it’s not been especially great in terms of quality. United will be scratching their heads as to how they are down and almost out, as they had been marginally the better team, without being brilliant, until Sané’s opening goal, which was gifted to him by Onana, who we can only assume had smeared butter all over his gloves pre-match.

The Red Devils’ attacks have all come down the left and they should have been ahead in the early stages, Davies doing brilliantly to stop Pellistri from scoring from close range before Ulreich saved the follow-up from Eriksen.

Rashford and Reguilon have occasionally threatened to get in behind and each got a shot away, but it was Sané’s somewhat tame effort which has had the biggest impact on the game so far, squirming past Onana.

As is so often happens after conceding, United went on to let in a second moments later, with the influential Musiela squaring for Gnabry to sweep home.

Bayern have created little else, with Kane not hugely involved, but they haven’t had to.

Half time: Bayern Munich 2-0 Manchester United

Two goals in four minutes have Bayern in control at the break!

as.com
43

Sané inches away from a third!

Moments of danger of either end, but it's Bayern who almost net a third!

Reguilon again breaks into the Germans' box but sees his cross cut out. The hosts race up the other end and Sané cuts in from the right, as he tends to do, before curling inches wide!

as.com

Onana mistake gifts Bayern opening goal

Reguilon showed better handling than Onana, unfortunately for Manchester United.

as.com
41

Incredibly risk stuff from Onana, who you wouldn't think had just made a howling mistake. He tries to pick a pass into midfield between Bayern attackers and gives it away, although he's lucky to get away with it this time.

as.com
38

We've seen very little from Rasmus Hojlund so far. He manages to win a knock-down to Casemiro, who tries to sweep the ball out to the left to Rashford, who is in acres of space. The Brazilian overhits it though and the danger has gone.

as.com
36

The Premier League side have at least been on the front foot since conceding those quick-fire goals.

as.com
35

Fernandes is next to try his luck for United but the last said about that effort from long range the better. Sent into orbit by the Portuguese.

as.com
33

Reguilon shoots just wide for United!

A decent response from the visitors, who have to dust themselves down quickly. And maybe they have done.

Reguilon makes a promising run into the box but drags an angled shot past the post.

as.com

The second goal is all down to Musiala's work out on the left. He jinks into the box unchallenged and cuts the ball back for Gbabry, who sweeps it first time into the corner. Two goals out of nowhere!

as.com
31

GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAL BAYERN! GNABRY!

United collapsing like a pack of cards here...

as.com

Oh no Onana!

Yes, he most definitely will. It's not been a great start to his United career...

as.com

Well, that has taken the wind out of United's sails. An incredible error from Onana. Remember, three goalkeepers on the bench. Any of them would've saved that.

as.com

Kane assists Sané, Onana mistake

Sané plays the ball into Kane, who lays it off perfectly for a left-footed shot from the edge of the box.

Onana, and I can''t emphasise this enough, makes a complete mess of keeping it out. He could've thrown his cap on that, if he was wearing one.

as.com
27

GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL BAYERN! SANÉ!

Their first effort on goal!

Ferdinand and Scholes watching former team Manchester United

Did Rio take his boots with him to Munich? If there's another injury in defence, he might be the next man up.

as.com
25

Reguilon is at it again! He tracks Sané all the way across to the other side of the field then picks his pocket with a brilliantly-timed tackle, again on the slide. Lovely.

as.com
23

Reguilon slides hard into Laimer, a tackle which wouldn't be out of place in the 1999 Champions League final between the teams. This is 2023, though, and you've seen yellow cards given for such challenges, even though he won the ball. But not this time.

As soon as I that, of course, Onana does have work to do. He does it really comfortably though, plucking Kimmich's corner out of the air without any fuss.

18

Bayern and Kane offering no threat in attack

There's been next to nothing in attack from Bayern, who haven't got Kane in the game or given Onana any work to do. Slow out of the traps, as they say.

as.com
16

Rashford tests Ulreich!

A first glimpse of Marcus Rashford in action and he looks in the mood! He turns Laimer inside and whips a low shot goalwards, which Ulreich deals with.

as.com
13

Bayern have been pretty out-of-sorts so far. Quite a few misplaced passes under no pressure from the hosts so far.

as.com

Reguilon is going to be OK to continue, thankfully for the away side. The might have had to send on one of the three goalkeepers they have on the bench. Times are tough.

as.com
11

Sané clatters Reguilon around the head and the Spaniard goes down. United could do without losing another defender.

as.com
10

Some neat play in midfield from the Red Devils and Fernandes looks to play Pellistri clean through...excellent covering again from Davies though.

as.com
9

United have made the more impressive start here. But then we said that about Antwerp at Barcelona last night and they lost 5-0...

as.com
6

Good pressing from the visitors so far, with Fernandes engaging with Davies high up the field, stopping the left-back from charging forward, as he tends to do.

as.com
4

Davies stops United opener!

How are United not in front?!

Eriksen breaks into the box and looks to have teed Pellistri up for a tap-in at the back post, only forDavies to somehow get a foot in. The ball comes back to the Dane, whose first-time shoot is knocked round the post by Ulreich.

as.com
3

The corner comes to nothing and now we've seen the first instance of something we've seen a lot of in the early part of the season - Onana with the ball at his feet desperately looking to make a forward pass.

Will the Glazer family sell Manchester United?

Will the Glazer family sell Manchester United?

Manchester United fans damn well hope so (pardon my French)!

Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim and INEOS owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe have both made bids for United after the current owners, the Glazer family, announced they were considering a full sale of the club nine months ago. However, that has yet to materialise and there has been some suggestion the potential buyers are getting sick of waiting. The different members of the Glazer family are reportedly at odds with one another over what to do with the club, and if they don't know what they want, what chance do the rest of us have?

The situation has led to uncertainty in the transfer market and how many successful clubs do you know that are badly run?

Manchester United's off-field issues: Jadon Sancho, Antony and Mason Greenwood

While things haven't been great on the field for United, they've been even worse off it. Ten Hag has been deprived of the services of three attacking players, for what can only be described as "personal issues".

Jadon Sancho is training away from the first-team squad after a high-profile falling out with the Dutch manager, who accused him of not training well enough. Antony has delayed his return to Old Trafford after international duty to "address allegations" of assault against him, while Mason Greenwood has been loaned out to Spanish club Getafe after criminal charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped.

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag explains Facundo Pellistri start

"Last year, we battled for the Champions League, this is where we belong, we deserve it, but we have to prove we deserve it again.

"Pellistri is doing very well, over a long period. He came from South America and to start against Brighton would be a tough journey. Today, I think tactically, it fits very good because [Alphonso] Davies is very offensive.

"He's got a lot of speed, and Pellistri can match that. Davies is not a great defender and his dribbling, so yeah, a good game for it [to start Pellistri]. We can have a lot of possession and with Bruno in the No.10, he's creative and a very good presser as well.

How have Manchester United started the 2023-24 season?

How have Manchester United started the 2023-24 season?

Have I gone a bit OTT on how bad Manchester United's start to the season has been? I don't think so. After finishing third in the Premier League in Erik Ten Hag's first season and winning the League Cup, there were hopes they could push on and challenge neighbours Manchester City for the title.

That's looking highly unlikely after defeats to Spurs, Arsenal and Brighton in their opening five league fixtures. They have also won two matches, at home to Wolves and Nottingham Forest, but were unconvincing in both.

They'll surely have to get their act together if they are to have any chance of avoiding losing to Bayern?

Hello and welcome to Bayern Munich vs Manchester United!

We had a five-star performance from Barcelona and an injury-time equaliser from a goalkeeper on matchday one night one. Can we top that on night two?

Of course we can, especially with matches of the calibre of Bayern Munich vs Manchester United on the menu!

I’m Roddy and thanks for joining me for this one, which, I'm sure you'll all agree, should bea lot of fun (especially with the way the Red Devils have been defending...)!
