The England captain left Tottenham Hotspur this summer and admitted that he was motivated by the opportunity to compete at the “highest level.”

Harry Kane has revealed that he had interest from Manchester United in the summer, but opted for Bayern Munich for the opportunity to compete “at the highest level.”

In an interview with The Athletic, Kane confirmed that Bayern Munich and Manchester United were both keen to secure his signature after he signalled his desire to leave boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur. But Kane, speaking ahead of Bayern’s Champions League opener against Manchester United, said that the German giants were always his first choice

It was down to Tottenham and Bayern,” Kane said. “Manchester [United] are a great club, a really big club, but I decided to come here, really glad I have.”

Can Bayern Munich win the Champions League?

Bayern Munich experienced an uncharacteristically chaotic season last year, waiting until the final day to secure their 11th straight Bundesliga title. Now, embarking on their first full campaign under head coach Thomas Tuchel, the German champions will be hoping to compete on all fronts once again.

Only Real Madrid and AC Milan can best Bayern’s six Champions League/European Cup triumphs. Kane said that he has been brought to Bavaria to help compete for a seventh European title.

“There is a reason that Bayern Munich brought me to the club,” he explained. “They were eager to get back to winning the Champions League.”

Kane relishing opportunity at “the highest level”

The forward only recently turned 30 but he has already left an impressive legacy in England. He is the all-time record goalscorer for both Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team, and won the Premier League Golden Boot on three occasions.

However he is yet to win a major trophy and is clearly eager to pick up some silverware while he is at the peak of his powers. At Bayern, a single season without a trophy is considered an unmitigated disaster and Kane will be expected to show his best form from the start.

It’s a daunting proposition, but one which Kane believes he is ready for.

They feel I can be a big help and I feel I can help the team as well. Time will tell how the [Manchester United] game plays out.”

He continued: “That is why I am here, I want to play in competitions at the highest level.”
