CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Borussia Dortmund or Real Madrid: who is the home team in the 2024 Champions League final? What color will each team wear?
The showpiece final for UEFA’s top clubs is almost upon us as fans eagerly await the arrival of the teams at the famous Wembley stadium in London.
The UEFA Champions League final is preparing to kick off. This year’s surprise contender, Borussia Dortmund, will face off against the most successful club, by far, in Europe’s premier competition, Real Madrid. The Spanish giants not only frequently reach the final but almost always emerge victorious when playing for the continental crown, whether at home or away.
This time, Real Madrid will be the away team at Wembley stadium, while Dortmund, returning to the venue where they lost to Bayern Munich 11 years ago, will be the home side. Interestingly, Dortmund was also on the left side of the scoreboard – following the tradition in soccer that the ‘home’ team goes first – in the 1997 Munich final where they triumphed over Juventus. This means the black and yellows have always been the designated home team in the three Champions League finals they have contested, with a record of one win and one loss thus far. The outcome of Sunday’s match remains to be seen.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, has been the designated ‘away’ team in six of their previous 17 finals. The 2024 final will mark the seventh time. Their record in those is, like Dortmund, balanced, with three defeats and three victories. Notably, all three losses occurred in the last century, when their name appeared on the right side of the scoreboard. Much time has passed since then.
Dortmund-Madrid: official UCL Final kits
The kits for both the German and Spanish teams at Wembley have been revealed, and it’s great news for everyone. Both teams will don their primary outfits: Dortmund will be in yellow (shirt and socks) with black shorts, and Real Madrid will be in their classic white. Dortmund’s goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel, will be dressed entirely in orange (shirt, shorts, and socks), while Madrid’s goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin, will wear green. The referees will sport matching blue shirts and socks with black shorts.
Dortmund has always played in their first kit in their three finals, including this one. Los Blancos, on the other hand, played in white in two of the three finals they lost. However, they have won many more in their traditional attire.
They have worn their signature white kit in 14 Champions League finals, winning 12 of them. The only losses in their iconic white were against Inter Milan (1964) and Liverpool (1981). The stage is set for Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid. Let the dance begin.
