Dortmund vs PSV Eindhoven: as it happened

Dortmund into quarterfinals

What's left to say? Dortmund were the better team over the piece. Yes, PSV had some chances, and will rue them, but they didn't offer enough quality.

Dortmund will be delighted to have made it back to the quarters but they'll have to find a way to maintain the initial intensity and quality that they showed tonight, which lasted about 20 minutes.

Thank you for joining me for the game and I'll see you again soon for more...

as.com
90+6

Peep, peep, peeeeeep! And that really is game over.

Borussia Dortmund are into the final eight.

as.com
90+5

GOAL!! Reus takes full advantage of a Babadi slip and runs through onto Benitez before slotting home. Game over.

as.com
90+4

CHANCE! And what a great one for De Jong to take us to extra time. Neat exchanges on the edge of the area and then the striker skies it.

Oh how he'll have nightmares about that.

as.com
90+4

Lozano tries his luck from distance after cutting in nicely from wide. Saved well.

as.com
90+2

Dortmund now have it clear. Just keep the game away from our goal until the whistle blows.

as.com
90

We'll have five more minutes added on

as.com
87

A lot of not very much in the last few minutes but PSV get themselves a freekick wide on the left and load up the penalty area.

It's Lozano who guides it into the mixer (I never understand leaving one of your top strikers far away from the goal in those situations) but a strong Dortmund head sends it safe.

The Dutch leaders go again...

as.com
83

With less than 10 to play I'm expecting PSV to start looking for that kitchen sink. They need a goal and are surely now in the zone where you don't want to be heading home saying "if only we'd really gone for it!"

What I must say is that whoever comes through this tie, the 'big boys' are not going to be particularly worried about facing them in the quarter finals.

as.com
79

CHANCE! Oh my! Lozano had a great opportunity to strike just seconds after the VAR decision.

The Mexican found himself at the back post, in space, and had a couple of seconds to sort out his feet for a strike at goal. He couldn't get the right position sorted out and shanks the ball wide.

That would have changed the mood around here.

as.com
78

GOAL DISALLOWED

Ignore that last comment. VAR had a quick check and saw that the striker's shoulder was three millimeters in front of the penultimate PSV player. Offside.

as.com
77

GOAL!! Fullkrug doubles the lead

as.com
76

Although I can't tell what was up with Sancho, the good news was he was walking off and giving the thumbs up to fans.

as.com
75

Sancho has picked up a knock and is being replaced by some new kid on the block, Marco Reus.

I failed to mention a few minutes ago that Malen was also replaced by Karim Adeyemi, so a very much freshened up attack support.

as.com
71

Lovely play from Bakayoko, completely destroying what I'd just said.

His disguised drag back on the left of the goal sends his marker to the deck, and his stinging shot almost caught out Kobel at the near post. The young winger has impressed tonight.

as.com
68

PSV know that they need a goal to level things up here and they continue to push forward, before failing to find sufficient space in the box so throw in a cross for De Jong.

as.com
64

SAVE! Benitez is there again.

The ball is played forward to Malen (who I'd say has carried the greatest threat tonight) and while his shoulder drop suggested he may try to beat his man on the outside right, he paused and drifts a tempting ball over the defence to Fullkrug who has pulled away at the back post.

The 'drift' element of the cross meant that all the power needed to be generated and, despite the striker heading low and away from the Argentinean, he was able to dive, stop, then smother.

as.com
61

Dortmund take any potential surge out of PSV's opening by just moving the ball around, from one side to the other, back to the keeper and round again. But they don't have too long before they're forced to go long again.

PSV are getting some openings but both teams have been guilty of some sloppiness in key moments, either control or decision making.

as.com
58

Felix Nmecha comes on for Brandt.

as.com
56

Much better from the visitors. The red shirt are swarming around their yellow and black hosts and a couple of deep crosses targeting De Jong in the mixer have caused some concern.

as.com
53

CLANG!! Lozano makes his opening statement after coming on at the break. A lovely clean strike from distance has Kobel (and the whole stadium) worried, but it hits the outside of the left post and goes out. Wry smile from the Mexican afterwards.

as.com
49

Bakayoko does really well again, taking down a long pass delightfully on his chest, looking up and delivery an almost perfect cross for De Jong in space in front of goal. The striker gets his head to it but it's an easy save.

as.com
47

SAVE! Benitez is the first keeper to be called into action as Malen makes space on the edge of the area and, very much in the mould of the opening goal, attempts to drive it low to the near post. It's not as tight to the upright as that of Sancho.

as.com
46

PSV start things off and immediately work the ball down the left and into the Dortmund area. It's cleared simply enough but it will be interesting to see how these two teams approach these opening second half minutes.

as.com

Peeep! We're back underway.

as.com

OK, the players are trotting back out and I'm just scanning for any changes...

Yes, Hirving Lozano has indeed made an early appearance, on for Guus Til.

as.com

Half-time mutterings

Oh yes, this image shows the good feeling that filtered around the stadium after just three minutes, but it's fair to say that the early dominance from Dortmund could have killed off the tie. It didn't, and PSV grew into it, albeit slowly.

Although I say the visitors grew, that's probably a little too much credit. More accurately, the hosts utter dominance died down and the game had some balance, but Edin Terzić's team were still the more likely to score next. And that continued right up until the break.

In the dressing room I can only imagine that Terzić is telling his players to up the intensity once again to what it was in the first 20 minutes, giving PSV no time to breath. If they can do that and score again, that could be that.

Peter Bosz, on the other hand, will be highlighting some of the threats they were able to pose, if only mild. De Jong needs more service but Bakayoko has shone in bursts and could pose some danger. Lozano is also an option from the bench.

as.com

Half time

Goals: Sancho 3'

as.com
45+1

The whistle blows and it's time for orange halves and wise words, or whatever the pros do these days.

as.com
45+1

PSV finish the half with a corner swung into the danger area but cleared relatively easily. That should be that.

as.com
45

A single minute to be added.

as.com
43

Some nice link up play and a neatly weighted through ball ends with a half, no, quarter chance being created for De Jong. PSV definitely pushing higher and asking more questions of the Dortmund backline.

as.com
40

As if he was reading my posts on a clever digital contact lens, Malen steps up the pace, cutting quickly outside his man and drilling hard and high goalwards, the net ruffling.

Depending on where you were sat in the ground, that could have looked in, but it was the side netting that took the brunt of it.

as.com
37

The yellow and blacks look to get their feet on the ball again, with their complete dominance having been somewhat negated. Clearly there is no rush for a second but it would certainly calm some nerves if they were to grab it.

as.com
34

Til now forces a save out of the home stopper. It wasn't a tough one, but again positive signs for any PSV fans who weren't enjoying the one-sided nature of the opening stages.

as.com
31

As we tick passed the half hour mark, Bakayoko gets what I think is the first real shot for PSV.

Cutting in from the right, the 20-year old strikes low and hard but Kobel has read the goalkeepers handbook and gets everything behind it.

Some hints that we may have a game on our hands.

as.com
29

Tillman just wouldn't give up there, inside a crowded Dortmund box but bouncing off players to keep possession in an attempt to keep the pressure on. The best PSV get is a dinked cross from Bakayoko but it's too high and out for a goal kick.

as.com
26

Another half chance but boy did Malen catch his strike from wide on the right cleanly. It whistles past the outside of the far post, much to Benitez's relief.

as.com
23

Twenty three minutes in and it's the first period, albeit brief, of controlled possession from PSV, starting from Dest bringing it out from the back.

The visitors win a corner and, after recycling the clearance, get a shot at goal, although Tillman is flagged offside. At least there was something there to build on.

as.com

Sancho celebrates

That's what it feels like to score inside three minutes in a crucial Champion League knockout game.

as.com
19

More slick footwork from Sancho eventually results in a corner but it could well have been more fruitful.

Manchester United fans must be wondering why they weren't able to benefit from the talent they spent so much to have.

as.com
16

DOUBLE SAVE!!

Benitez does really well, called into action first from Brandt and then Malen who was quickest to react to the rebound. That could/should have been 2-0.

as.com
13

I mentioned Malen looked in the mood. Sancho shows just how much he fancies this too with some lovely skill to beat his covering men, almost creating another opening.

PSV yet to bother Kobel.

as.com
12

Another chance for the home team, Fullkrug being presented with a free strike at goal after good work from Sule, but the striker fluffs it wide with his left foot.

as.com
10

Nice one ref! Bit of a comedy moment there as Dortmund look to break quickly, passing out from defence but it's so quick that the referee, Daniele Orsato, can't get out of the way and blocks it.

As the gentle complaints come his way, he's adamant there was nothing he could do.

as.com
8

Malen picks up the ball wide on the right and you can see in his eyes that he fancies this. He looks to take on Dest but just knocks it too far ahead and it's safe for PSV.

as.com
6

We're six minutes in and it's one-way traffic. Clearly there's a long way to go, and momentum changes, but PSV have to be careful that it's not over before they find their collective feet.

as.com
as.com
3

GOAL!! Sancho gives Dortmund a super early lead.

It seems silly to say 'it was coming' after so little time but following that initial flurry it was Brandt who laid it off to the English winger who controlled and drilled it low just inside the near post.

as.com
2

Wow! I wasn't lying about the pace. The hosts give no space to the PSV defence who fail to clear and Maatsen gets a shot away after, I should say, staying on his feet when he could have gone down. Good save from Benitez.

as.com
1

Dortmund get the ball rolling, playing right to left as I watch on. Immediately it seems clear that this is going to be a high-paced game.

as.com

Peeeeep! We're off

as.com

Handshakes done, and we're ready to go.

Dortmund can't be "sloppy" again

You may remember that Dortmund manager Edin Terzić described his team's first leg performance as "sloppy", and they still came away with a draw.

For what it's worth, I'm expecting a high scoring game, with the home crowd carrying the hosts home in 90 minutes. Maybe 4-2 on the night!

Familiar faces

Did you know that we have a number of connections here today? Take Donyell Malen, for example, who faces his former club, PSV.

And on the other side, Eindhoven coach Peter Bosz is making a return to familiar territory in Dortmund, a club he once managed. Here's what the visiting boss had to say ahead of the game about one of his potential tactics.

"Sergiño [Dest] is a very attack minded player, and so by positioning Tillman on the left as well, I want to give Süle something to think about when both of our boys push forward."

as.com

Dutch courage

In case you were worried, obviously the PSV team bus arrived some time ago and the players are safe and sound inside the stadium. Now it's all about getting the game head on...

Dortmund's 'evening attire'

We may have been enjoying the Oscars the other night – here's what happened if you missed it – but there'll be no frocks and suits for the players, at least until long after the game, and likely just the suits!

That said, there's something very satisfying, don't you think, about seeing all the attire for the game in place awaiting the stars to get dressed.

as.com

PSV team thoughts

For the Dutch team, the big sigh of relief will have come from the news that Veerman was back to full fitness and slots into the visitors' midfield.

Bosz, as he has frequently done this season, teams up with Schouten and Boscagli in central defence. Bakayoko is brought in up front, to work with De Jong and Tillman, which sees Lozano being relegated to the bench.

as.com

Dortmund team thoughts

Back to the team news and for the hosts there are no major surprises.

Ryerson, who was uncertain due to skin inflammation and missed the final training session, is not included from the off but could appear later. Salih Özcan takes his place.

Emre Can will play on the right side of defense, with Süle and Hummels in the center, and Maatsen on the left.

Goalscorer in the first leg, Malen, along with Sancho on the other flank will look to cause havoc and get the crowd as noisy as possible... not that they'll need much encouragement.

Control your Dest-iny

He'll be lining up at left back for the visitors but he also fancies himself as a bit of a gamer.

As he takes control of his own player, he also admits to being "one of the fastest" in his team, the real one.

Why isn’t Gio Reyna playing for Borussia Dortmund against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League?

There may be some of you tuning in to this coverage to check how American star Gio Reyna gets on. My previous posts with the team news will have clearly disappointed if that is the case.

Reyna has long been considered one of the USMNT’s top young talents but 2023-24 hasn’t been his season. A regular in the Dortmund team at the age of just 18, the attacking midfielder’s recent time in Germany has been hampered by injuries and inconsistency, to the extent that he has swapped the latter stages of the Champions League for a regelation battle in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest.

Hence, despite still being on the books of the German's, he is playing no part in the second half of the season for them. (Please stay though, there's so much more to this game).

Home comforts for Dortmund

Dortmund will be banking on their formidable home form in the UEFA Champions League as they seek to progress past PSV and secure a spot in the quarter-finals for the first time in three seasons. Dortmund have reached the round of 16 for the ninth time overall, marking their fifth appearance in six seasons.

The Signal Iduna Park faithful have been known to provide a cauldron of support, and Dortmund will be relying on that familiar atmosphere to spur them on tonight.

PSV are making their fifth appearance at this stage, with only their second in 17 seasons. They aim to advance to the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2006/07 season.

PSV Eindhoven - Borussia Dortmund summary: score, goals and highlights, Champions League

What do you mean you missed the first leg?! I hope you had a good excuse.

Well, lucky for you are William Gittins kept the receipts and so you can check back in detail what happened on the night. Here's his post-match report:

PSV Eindhoven return to the knockout stages of the Champions League with a hard-fought draw against Borussia Dortmund.

The hosts started well but were wasteful in the final third, Malik Tillman missing three presentable chances early on. Dortmund struggled to get a foothold in the opening stages when Donyell Malen fired home from a tight angle against his former club.

PSV continues to push in the second half but needed a bit of fortune to draw level. Dortmund defender Matts Hummels flew into a challenge in the box and gave away a foul on Tillman.

Luuk de Jong stepped up to take the penalty kick for the hosts and made no mistake from close range.

As the game ticked on both sides seemed fairly content to take the draw. The tie is perfectly poised ahead of the second leg in Dortmund.
