What's next for Real Madrid? And Celta?

Having kept themselves in touch with Barça tonight - and ended their losing run in LaLiga - Real Madrid's attentions now turn to European matters. On Wednesday, Los Merengues host Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 - with star striker Kylian Mbappé racing to be fit for the clash.

For Celta Vigo, the focus also shifts to continental competition. In the Europa League round of 16, the Galicians welcome Ligue 1 club Lyon to Balaídos next Thursday.

Arbeloa speaks: "Performance deserves a lot of praise"

Real Madrid's head coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, is already speaking to the media in his postgame press conference. 

Pointing to Madrid's many, many absentees, Arbeloa said: “I think the performance the lads put in tonight deserves a lot of praise.”

“Yes, of course [we’re still confident in our chances of winning the title],” he added. “A long way to go. A lot of points still up for grabs: 33, unless I’m mistaken.” He is not mistaken.

As is noted by soccer stats expert Mister Chip, that's now eight wins on the spin for Real Madrid at Balaídos.

Celta lose ground in Betis pursuit

Celta, meanwhile, have missed the chance to get closer to fifth-placed Real Betis. Los Verdiblancos can now move six points clear of the Galicians: Betis visit Getafe on Sunday at 10:15 a.m. ET.

How things look at the top

Had Real Madrid been held in Vigo, Barcelona would have had the chance to open up a six-point lead tomorrow. Thanks to that Valverde strike, however, Madrid cut the gap to a provisional one point.

From 3:00 p.m. ET tomorrow, we'll find out whether Barça can re-establish their four-point lead at San Mamés.

Balaídos acclaim for Celta

Despite seeing their team fall to that last-ditch defeat, the Celta Vigo fans greet the final whistle with rapturous applause for the home side. Os Celestes' attacking threat waned in the second half - that Iago Aspas chance aside - but they have given Madrid a very tough night's work.

And that is that! Valverde's last-ditch, deflected goal gives Real Madrid victory in Vigo!

Madrid pretty much dominated throughout that second half at Balaídos, but had struggled to create much in the way of clearcut openings, to be honest. One swing of a Valverde boot later, though, Los Blancos have the three points they desperately needed.

After two LaLiga defeats on the bounce, Madrid return to winning ways. Celta's four-game victory streak, meanwhile, is over.

It was indeed an error; we're three minutes into a total of five.

At one end, Mendy has to get his body firmly in the way to muscle El-Abdellaoui off it, as the Celta substitute threatens to pull the trigger inside the box.

At the other end...

 

Celta bring on Vecino for Ilaix.

Asencio is booked for a rather robust tackle on Aspas.

The TV graphic says we're to have 50 (FIFTY) minutes of time added on. One can only presume that is an error.

Pitarch is off for a fellow academy youngster, as Arbeloa throws on Manuel Ángel Morán.

Oh, blimey. Aspas is inches away from grabbing the headlines.

Celta have offered next to zilch in attack in this second half, but Aspas's quality on the ball almost tells there. Receiving on the edge of the ball, he hoodwinks two Madrid defenders with the drop of a shoulder, opening up a nice pocket of space to shoot. 

Shoot he does... but his left-footed strike bounces back off the upright! Courtois was beaten. What a moment that would have been for the hosts.

Tchouaméni is booked for a late lunge on Starfelt.

Madrid continue to hog possession inside the Celta half, but time is very much running out - and Arbeloa's men aren't exactly slicing their hosts open.

It remains to be seen what Barça do in Bilbao tomorrow; that's hardly a gimme for the Blaugrana. But Madrid can ill afford to drop more points tonight.

Here comes Aspas, who replaces Mingueza.

The veteran is given the huge reception you'd expect him to get.

We haven't seen too much of Celta in attack of late. They bring it forward now, though.

Ah. But Román's inside pass from the right wing is played straight to Valverde. Madrid bring it clear.

It's all being played in the Celta half.

Alexander-Arnold swings over a corner from the left, and - for a moment - Radu rather flaps at it. The loose ball doesn't drop to a Madrid shirt, however, and Celta clear.

The hosts are preparing to introduce Iago Aspas.

On comes Gonzalo, with Brahim making way. Not the winger's night, it's fair to say.

Having won a corner, Madrid deliver into the middle courtesy of Alexander-Arnold. The ball pings about amid a cluster of bodies, before dropping to Rüdiger's feet. The German swipes fairly wildly at the bouncing ball - and thrashes it high, wide and very handsome.

Vinícius tries a tricky, flicky move to beat his man. He does not pull it off. The home fans howl in derision.

Madrid are readying Gonzalo García to come on, I believe.

And the decision is... no penalty! Señor Díaz de Mera says there was an attacking foul before Jutglà appeared to handle. That's an escape for Celta.

Just under 20 to go in Galicia; 1-1 it remains.

Oh, hello....

Before that triple change, Jutglà appeared to handle as he defended a Madrid cross from the right. The referee is called over to the monitor to look at it...

Here comes that Celta change.

Jones El-Abdellaoui, Fer López and Hugo Álvarez are on.

Iglesias, Jutglá and Swedberg are off.

Madrid are really starting to pin Celta back now.

Ten yards outside the Celta box, Vinícius does very well to win the ball back from Iglesias, who simply cannot be losing the ball in that position.

Vinícius then exchanges passes with Palacios, who has space to shoot - but blazes over!

That's incisive play by Vinícius, who cuts inside and gets plenty of welly behind a shot from 20 yards.

It's a dipping effort, but it's straight at Radu. The keeper holds on without too much fuss.

Arbeloa does indeed make a change, replacing Güler with César Palacios.

Güler, it is fair to say, is not happy to be hooked.

Celta, meanwhile, are preparing a triple substitution.

That's better forward play by Real Madrid, who create a decent opening for Pitarch.

In the right-hand channel, Valverde slips it wide to Alexander-Arnold, who pings a crisp cutback to Pitarch at the top of the box.

His first-time shot is well struck, but it's blocked.

Valverde tries to pick out Brahim's run forward on the right, and fails to do so. The ball trundles behind.

Arbeloa will be thinking about the odd sub or too in the near future, one would imagine.

The outcome of this game is really hard to call.

Forward come Celta, Carreira feeding Jutglà to play it into the middle. Jutglà's cross is blocked, and Celta win a corner.

The corner comes to nought.

Vinícius is seeing a lot more of the ball now.

Scuttling forward on the left, he delivers left-footed into the box, under extreme pressure from a gaggle of sky-blue shirts. His cross flies straight into the hands of goalkeeper Radu - and the home fans loved the way their defenders shut Vinícius out. Cries of approval from Balaídos.

That's fine play by Brahim. He conjures up a change of pace to break towards the Celta box, before feeding it left to Vinícius.

Vinícius, in turn, wins a corner. 

Said corner is worked back to Güler, who lifts it into the box. Celta deal with it.

Just for a moment, Mendy threatens to get himself into a frightful tangle. The left-back briefly loses it to Iglesias, who - for a second or two - looks like he's going to scamper away from the Frenchman and into the Madrid box. Mendy recovers his position, however, and finally wins a free-kick off the striker.

On the right wing, Celta look to work it Román, but he's muscled off it. Goal-kick to the visitors.

Having regained possession, Madrid keep it for a good minute in the Celta half - before Vinícius tries to jink past Jutglà on the left, and loses it. Throw-in to the hosts, who can clear.

Again Vinícius scampers forward, before backheeling it to Güler just outside the Celta box.

Güler tries to return it quickly to Vinícius, who has continued his run into the penalty area, but the home defense deals with it.

Right away, Vinícius darts forward and tries to feed Brahim on the right, but Alonso steps in and mops up.

As Madrid launched that attack, by the way, the referee fell over. Nothing invites fan hilarity like a referee falling over.

Peeep! We're back underway at Balaídos.

Confirmed: no half-time subs.

Second half imminent

The half-time team talks appear to have reached their conclusion, and the players are just now emerging from the tunnel.

There don't seem to be any changes at the break.

Mbappé’s Paris trip raises hope – but the clock is ticking

After tonight's game in Vigo, Madrid's attentions turn back to the Champions League: Los Blancos face Manchester City on Wednesday, in the first leg of the last 16.

Will Mbappé be back for that crucial clash at the Bernabéu?

My colleagues Fernando Tavero and Calum Roche have the lowdown on the striker's race against time to return to fitness.

Madrid set to lose further ground in title race?

As things stand, Madrid are dropping points for the third LaLiga game in a row. Should it end all square at Balaídos, Barcelona will have the chance to extend their LaLiga lead to six points this weekend.

The Catalans go to the Basque Country to take on Athletic Club, led by their former head coach Ernesto Valverde, tomorrow.

TAA "weak" for Celta leveller

Alexander-Arnold could certainly have done more to prevent Swedberg from setting Iglesias up for Celta's equalizer. In the aftermath of that goal for the hosts, AS journalist Tomás Roncero posted this indictment of the Englishman's defensive efforts: “Trent's defending is very weak.”

Peeep peeep peeep! One each at the break. That was a very enjoyable first 45.

Celta responded excellently to Tchouaméni's 10th-minute goal: Iglesias levelled a quarter of an hour later, and the hosts could well have had a second.

It was a half in which domination ebbed and flowed; overall, a pretty even first act.

We're into three minutes of time added on at Balaídos.

Only a fine Courtois stop prevents Celta from going ahead!

It's excellent buildup play by the hosts, who stroke it about neatly before finding Carreira on the right. His first-time ball into the box is fizzed right onto the toe of Swedberg, who just has to jut out a boot and redirect the ball goalwards.

That he does - but Courtois beats it out!

Generous Güler

Per Opta, Güler's assist for Tchouaméni puts him level with Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes in Europe's assist chart.

Back come Celta, who have responded ever so well to that Madrid opener.

Released into space on the left, Mingueza cuts back onto his right boot, before curling a cross into the danger area, towards Iglesias. Madrid deal with it.

That's fine, enterprising stuff by Jutglà. Scampering down the right wing, the former Barça man is surrounded by Madrid shirts; however, he twists and turns into space to shoot, pinging a left-footed shot on goal from an angle. It's well struck, but Jutglà doesn't get the right direction on it. Courtois watches it fly off target.

On the right, Alexander-Arnold slips the ball into Brahim. Watched by Alonso, Brahim can't wriggle free and into the box. He knocks it back to Alexander-Arnold, who clips a cross into the box. It's too close to Radu, and the goalkeeper claims with ease.

Again Tchouaméni shoots!

From the right-hand channel, Güler drifts inside, before playing it across the top of the box. Brahim lets it run - and it falls nicely into Tchouaméni's path. But he skies his shot!

For now, at least, Tchouaméni is back on his feet and looks like he's carrying on.

Oh dear. Tchouaméni, who went down in pain in the game's opening moments, is back on the turf. The Madrid medics are on to attend to the Frenchman, who looks in need of a heavy dabbing with the magic sponge.

You do not need me to tell you that Madrid can do without losing Tchouaméni as well.

Iglesias is the first player to go into the referee's notebook, for bringing down Mendy.

Immediately, Madrid get their foot on the ball in the Celta half. Can the visitors respond to that leveller? It had been a very decent first 25 or so for Álvaro Arebloa's men.

Celta created a couple of very decent early chances for Iglesias, but the hosts' threat has waned since then. Madrid have settled right down now. Particularly since Tchouaméni's goal, the visitors look very confident.

From zero in 53 to two in three

Some more context to Tchoaméni's recent mini-goal glut. The Spanish soccer stats guru Mister Chip notes that the midfielder hadn't scored in 53 games for club and country when he broke his drought against Benfica last Wednesday. Two in three now for the Frenchman.

Having taken an early lead, Real Madrid look all the more confident for it. 

They enjoy a sustained period of possession inside the Celta half, stroking it about patiently.

Finally, Valverde finds a yard of space to shoot from 25 yards out - but his effort flies well over.

In search of a quickfire equalizer, Celta get Iglesias running into the Madrid box. Courtois comes out to meet the striker - who dinks his finish juuuust past the far post.

Ah, but the flag is up. And replays show that Iglesias was, indeed, a yard or so offside.

Up until last week, Tchouaméni hadn't scored a single goal this season. He now has two: one against Benfica on Feb. 25, and now today's. Both fine strikes from the edge of the area. 

Well, it's been mostly Celta ball so far - but it's Madrid who now come closest to opening the scoring!

On the right, Alexander-Arnold lifts a lovely ball forward into the run of Vinícius. In the blink of an eye, the Brazilian is haring into the box, with Celta defenders in vain pursuit.

From the right of the box, Vinícius doesn't hit it quite cleanly, but it beats Radu. It doesn't beat the post, however! It rolls across the goalline and away!

Back come Celta, who are clearly full of confidence and popping it about very nicely indeed.

Finally, Román sends a long ball over the top in search of Jutglà, who scampers in behind the Madrid defense. Courtois has to come out quickly to get his head to the ball and clear the danger.

Another fine shooting chance for Iglesias! Courtois has to look alive to beat the shot out.

Receiving at the top of the box, Iglesias slaps a firm, low left-footed strike in the direction of Courtois' bottom-left corner. The Madrid keeper is quickly down to meet the ball, and gets a strong hand behind it.

A really encouraging start from the hosts.

For the first time tonight, Madrid find Brahim Díaz in a pocket of space inside the Celta half, with the chance to run at the home defense.

Díaz is quickly dispossessed, though.

Having lost that first-minute challenge for the ball, Tchouaméni was briefly left in a crumpled heap on the Balaídos turf. Thankfully for Madrid, who can ill afford any more injury mishaps, the Frenchman is quickly back up on his feet.

Right away, there's a decent enough shooting chance for Borja Iglesias!

In the midfield, three players challenge for a bouncing ball - and the upshot is it falls straight ti Iglesias, lurking with intent on the edge of the Madrid box.

Iglesias has plenty of space - too much, in truth - to try and get over his shot. But he can't: he shanks it well over the bar.

Peeeep! We are underway in Vigo.

Today's match referee is 36-year-old Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos. In the VAR booth, meanwhile, will be 42-year-old Juan Luis Pulido Santana.

A Real milestone

Today is, I should point, out, Real Madrid's birthday.

One hundred and twenty-four years ago today, on Mar. 6 1902, Madrid Foot-Ball Club officially came into being. Eighteen years on, in mid-1920, Spanish King Alfonso XIII gave the club permission to add “Real” - which translates as “royal” - to their name.

Over the century and (nearly) a quarter since then, Madrid's extensive trophy haul has included 36 LaLiga titles and 15 European Cups. Their hopes of adding to that collection will, in part, depend on how they acquit themselves in Galicia tonight.

Not only do Madrid have that painful memory of December's defeat to Celta, but they know they're up against a team that's bang in form.

Claudio Giráldez's men sit sixth in LaLiga - a position they haven't finished in since 2016 - and have won four games in a row in all competitions. Most recently, they triumphed 2-1 in a league clash at Girona on Sunday.

Celta are also progressing very nicely indeed on the continental stage, where they’re through to the last 16 of the Europa League. They'll take on Lyon, Endrick's new team. for a quarterfinal place later this month.
 

When Celta gave Madrid a Bernabéu beating

That sole Madrid defeat to Celta came earlier this season: in December, Os Celestes were 2-0 winners at the Bernabéu, courtesy of two goals by Williot Swedberg, in a frankly nightmarish game for Los Merengues.

After all, Madrid pulled off the not unimpressive feat of having not one, but two left backs sent off in the same match: Fran García for two bookings, Álvaro Carreras for running his mouth off at the referee.

In fact, Madrid actually had three men sent off. Despite not being on the field, substitute Endrick also managed to talk his way into a red card.

One defeat in 20 for Madrid

And if we expand that previous stat out to include home-and-away clashes in all competitions, the history books tell us that Real Madrid have lost just once to Celta in the teams' last 20 meetings.

Real Madrid head to Balaídos with a rather spiffing recent record in Vigo. Indeed, the men from the capital have won on their last seven LaLiga visits to the stadium.

The last time Los Blancos failed to win in Vigo was back in in January 2018, when a Gareth Bale brace wasn't enough to win all three points in a 2-2 draw.

Mbappé's unable to shake off knee problem

With 38 goals in 33 games, Mbappé is Madrid's top scorer this season - but he has sat out Los Blancos' last two matches, and is unavailable again today. He continues to be dogged by a persistent, pesky knee injury.

There has been talk that the Frenchman will have to go under the knife to solve the problem, but the club indicated in a statement this week that this won't be happening, at least not for now. Instead, Mbappé will be following a “conservative” course of treatment.

Madrid's missing men

The makeup of that Real Madrid lineup is informed by a really rather lengthy list of absences in Álvaro Arbeloa's squad.

In addition to David Alaba and Rodrygo Goes, Madrid's injury victims also include Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Ceballos, Éder Militao and, of course, Kylian Mbappé.

What's more, Carreras isn't the only Madrid player who's banned for today's game. Dean Huijsen also serves a one-match suspension for accumulated yellow cards, while Franco Mastantuono has been banned for two games for his red card against Getafe.

We're still waiting for team news from Celta - who, by the way, have written an open letter to Madonna, of all people.

Apparently the pop icon once wore a Celestes shirt during a concert, and the club would very much like to track that jersey down.

Asencio, Mendy and Brahim in for Madrid

There are three changes to the Madrid team that began the defeat to Getafe: Raúl Asencio, Ferland Mendy and Brahim Díaz come into the XI. The injured David Alaba and the suspended Álvaro Carreras make way, along with striker Gonzalo García, who drops to the bench at Balaídos.

Asencio is back just over a week after suffering a neck strain against Benfica, while Mendy makes his first Madrid appearance since the Spanish Super Cup in January. Brahim, meanwhile, is handed his first start for Los Blancos since November, I make it.

Rodrygo: his future is here

Following Monday's defeat to Getafe, tests confirmed that Rodrygo had suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee, as well as a rupture of the lateral meniscus. The Brazil international will miss the rest of the season, as well as the World Cup.

Two costly defeats

A week after establishing themselves as LaLiga leaders, Madrid were beaten 2-1 at Osasuna - a defeat that allowed Barça to return to the top courtesy of a 3-0 triumph over Levante the following day.

And last weekend, Barça thumped Villarreal 4-1 at the Camp Nou to open up a four-point gap on Saturday - before Madrid lost 1-0 at home to Getafe on Monday. It was Los Azulones’ first win at the Bernabéu in 18 years.

Martín Satriano’s wonderful first-half volley proved the winner for the visitors, on a night when Madrid had Javier Mastantuono sent off - and lost Rodrygo Goes to a serious knee injury. All round, a sub-optimal evening for Los Blancos.

Real wheels come off in LaLiga

On Feb. 14, after thumping Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Bernabéu, Real Madrid found themselves back on top of LaLiga. Two days later, Barcelona were beaten by Girona, confirming Los Blancos as league leaders by a two-point margin.

But in Madrid's two LaLiga games since then, consecutive defeats have swiftly turned that two-point advantage into a four-point deficit.
