Champions League round of 16 draw: when is it and what teams have qualified?

After matchday 4 of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League group stage, six teams have mathematically secured their places in the Round of 16.

With two rounds of games still to be played in the group stage of the 2023-24 Champions League, six teams have already progressed through to the Round of 16.

On Tuesday, holders Manchester City along with RB Leipzig advanced from Group G with City putting three past Young Boys with the Germans beating Red Star in Belgrade to progress.

Four more teams advanced on Wednesday with Real Madrid putting three past Braga to progress from the group stage for the 28th time since 1995-1996. Ancelotti’s men now boast a clean sweep of four wins from four with a game at home to Napoli and a trip to Berlin set to conclude the schedule for the LaLiga side.

Real Sociedad are very much the surprise package of the group stage with the Basques topping Group D with three wins and a draw. On Wednesday night, they were 3-0 to the good against a disappointing Benfica side after half an hour. The San Sebastian side are joined by fellow Group D side Inter Milan after the Serie A giants beat Salzburg with a late Lautaro Martinez penalty securing maximum points.

Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Inter Milan, Manchester City and RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich all know that they will be in Round of 16 action come February with these sides anxious now to push on and secure top billing and face a second placed side in the next stage.

The draw for the Round of 16 is set for Monday, 18 December. The 16 qualified teams will be divided into two groups of eight between the first placed and second placed teams in the group stage. Clubs from the same national federation and those that have already faced each other in the group stage will not be able to meet in the Round of 16 qualifiers.

The next stage of the competition will begin in February, when the Champions League returns with games scheduled on 13, 14 and 20/21 February. The return legs will be played on 5, 6, 12 and 13 of March.

On Friday, 15 March, 2024, the draw for the quarterfinals and semifinals will be held, which will set the path for the showpiece final on 1 June, 2024 at Wembley (London).
