World Cup star secures $70 million Premier League transfer: a record for the club

From World Cup breakout star with Switzerland to the most expensive signing in Aston Villa history, Johan Manzambi is officially a Villan. Pending the completion of a medical that had been scheduled for Thursday, the 20-year-old midfielder is set to join Aston Villa in a club-record deal worth £52 million ($70 million) from Freiburg.

Villa had to outbid Newcastle to land one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents. The Magpies had already reached an agreement with Freiburg but failed to convince the player, allowing Unai Emery’s side to step in. The fee eclipses the £50 million ($67 million) Villa paid for Amadou Onana in 2024, making Manzambi the club’s most expensive signing ever.

Emery’s Champions League project sealed the deal

Unai Emery’s vision for Aston Villa’s return to the Champions League proved decisive. Manzambi had always planned to postpone his decision until after Switzerland’s World Cup campaign, even though it ended in disappointment.

The young midfielder suffered a knee injury after the group stage, forcing him to miss Switzerland’s Round of 32 clash with Colombia and their eventual Round of 16 elimination against Argentina.

Even so, Manzambi had already announced himself on the global stage. He scored twice against Bosnia and Herzegovina, recorded a goal and an assist versus Canada, and added another assist against Algeria. Those performances quickly attracted interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Freiburg recognizing that the academy graduate they had signed on a free transfer from Servette in 2023 had become one of the continent’s hottest prospects.

A reunion months after the Europa League final

In a twist of fate, Manzambi joins Emery only months after Freiburg lost to Aston Villa in the Europa League final in Istanbul on May 20. The Swiss international played the full 90 minutes as Villa lifted the trophy, getting an up-close look at the team he will now represent.

His arrival also comes at an important moment for Villa. Following the sale of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, and with Morgan Rogers and Lucas Digne also linked with possible departures as the club works to improve its financial position, Emery was eager to strengthen his midfield ahead of Villa’s return to Europe’s premier club competition.

Manzambi offers versatility across the center of the pitch. Although he operated primarily as an attacking midfielder during the World Cup, he filled several midfield roles for Freiburg during the 2025-26 campaign, finishing with seven goals and six assists. Villa have invested heavily in one of European soccer’s brightest young talents, believing his best years are still to come.
