Will Club América sign one of Spain’s World Cup finalists?
As América strengthens for the Apertura 2026, the Liga MX giants have been eyeing Borja Iglesias, who is part of Spain’s World Cup squad.
Club América’s blockbuster pursuit of Celta Vigo’s Borja Iglesias has come up against major obstacles, meaning the Liga MX club will probably have to source its next striker elsewhere.
Finances stall Borja buy
According to Mediotiempo, Celta is demanding €10 million ($11.4 million) for the Spain forward, a price tag América is unwilling to meet. On top of that, Iglesias is reportedly seeking a salary higher than that of club captain Henry Martín, further complicating the deal.
Iglesias, who is part of the Spanish squad that has reached the World Cup final, remains on América’s radar; however, a move to Mexico appears increasingly unlikely because of the financial and contractual hurdles involved.
What about América’s Chávez chase?
Meanwhile, Dynamo Moscow’s Luis Chávez also seems destined to remain out of América’s reach, as his top priority is to stay in European soccer and continue competing at that level.
What’s more, Dynamo has no intention of selling the Mexican midfielder, effectively shutting the door on any potential negotiations.
América already exploring alternatives
With its pursuit of Iglesias and Chávez hitting roadblocks, América’s front office has already begun evaluating backup options, identifying alternative targets who could strengthen Las Águilas’ roster for the Liga MX’s latest short tournament.
The 16-time Mexican champions kick off their Apertura 2026 campaign on Saturday, visiting Querétaro at 11:10 p.m. ET/8:10 p.m. PT.
