What an end to the game which in the dying minutes had appeared to be handed to the hosts after a clumsy penalty was awarded to them. Then Casemiro, a man used to dramatic comebacks, stepped up.

Probably a fair result across the piece.

Elanga bursts away down the left wing for United but Jorginho decides it's worth a booking and takes him out.

There are a couple of niggles creeping into this, Martinez giving a cheeky push to the Italian too. This means a lot.

Shaw has just been carded for a naughty trip on Azpilicueta as he broke forward, and that followed a booking for Fred who got a little too deep in the ref's ear after the penalty award.

McTominay is just on and he thought it wise to keep hold of Broja as they prepared for a corner to be delivered. Silly Scot.

Eriksen and Fernandes both have half-hearted hits towards goal but United haven't shown much since the change in ends.

After Chilwell did really well to win a corner, the resulting ball in is met at the back post by the defender whose header is onto the crossbar and over.

De Gea likely had it but something to get the fans edging off their seats.

With just over 20 minutes to go, it's hard to pick a winner here.

Mount does well to create space for a cross but wastes it. Antony then tries to break and fails to turn it into anything useful.

That sort of sums it up at this stage, although all it takes is a moment of genius or utter muppetry, so stay with me.

So much better from the hosts. They've not managed to create anything of real note but with Kovacic in there have pressed and managed the game so much better.

United need to change something as they can't make inroads at all.

Not much going in the direction of Kepa's goal in this half but Fred tries his luck from just inside the area. Always going wide but the build up was more positive.

Victor Lindelof comes on as the replacement. Extra positivity for the home fans!

Worrying images here as Varane is down and hurt.

He landed awkwardly as Auba skipped away earlier and is going to have to be replaced.

He's in tears, potentially already considering missing the upcoming World Cup with France. Let's hope it's not too serious.

Chelsea continue to have the better of this half and between Sterling and Auba they should have, at least, troubled De Gea. They failed to.

It's a goal kick to Chelsea.

Why on earth am I telling you something as dull as that? I hear you ask. Well, it was one of those beautiful moments when the ref made his decision to award that over a corner (when it was tough to tell either way) and two sets of fans contrasted in their reaction. Knowing applause from home fans, raging disbelief from the visitors meters away.

Best moment of the second half, for me.

Although United looked the better in the first half, one player who failed to shine was Sancho and he's just been yanked off by Ten Hag.

The much-improved Fred joins his compatriot Casemiro in the midfield.

Chelsea win a corner after Loftus-Cheek has a go from distance. It's been a good opening to the second half from the Blues. Can they keep it up?

The home players are immediately on the front foot, United tucking in deep, likely being told to expect a strong start.

No room to get in behind though and the Red Devils clear downfield.

Peeep! We're back underway, Chelsea getting the ball rolling.

I mentioned that Potter's decision after the half-hour to make a change could prove to be significant. But I feel for the player.

No more action to mention and the players are off down the tunnel. Managers and masseurs have 15 minutes to play their part.

Antony is fed through the middle by Fernandes and strikes as he enters the area. Kepa can't reach it but the ball flies just wide of the right hand post. His head is quickly in his hands. He's annoyed at himself; best chance of the game.

Kovacic is desperate to get on the ball and is linking up well.

Almost a decent chance for Auba, it just doesn't fall for him, is quickly followed by an Eriksen effort from distance.

I may be wrong but that sub from Potter has already made a difference to the game. Let's see.

The Danish puppet master

It really looks like an inspired signing now.

I love it when this happens.

Potter has had enough and has gone for an early change of shape and personnel.

Mateo Kovacic is on for Cucurella. Let's see how this reflects in terms of game control.

On the back of those two promising United chances, The Blues have two of their own.

Mount on the left, then Azpilicueta on the right. Both completely fluff their crossing lines.

United back on the front foot, and create a double chance.

First it's Rashford bursting into the inside right channel and letting rip. It's one of those low dippers, with plenty behind it, but Kepa pushes away well.

Sancho is not slow in following up but it's an easier save and the immediately danger passes.

How dare they! Chelsea manage to get their collective feet on the ball for more than a couple of seconds and move into the United half. Antony seems offended by this change in direction and thwacks through Jorginho.

More pressure from the visitors, Chelsea just can't get a hold of the ball, and Kepa makes up for his lack of attention by blocking well when it looked as though Rashford was in.

I'm sensing the locals are getting restless.

United have had the best of the play in the last 10 or so and a silly mishandling of a bouncing ball from Kepa gives away a cheap corner.

Had a goal come from that there would have been some very angry faces heading in the stopper's direction. Fortunately for him, nothing did come.

Like Kepa, I'll just ignore that free kick by the English striker.

Eriksen and Sancho have linked up well for United, while Antony must be a nightmare for defenders when he's on his game.

The Brazilian's dancing feet has offered up a dead ball shooting chance for Eri... Ferna... Sanch... oh, it's Rashford stepping up to hit this.

Back and forth goes possession, neither side looking to hold onto the ball for too long. That's a generally positive sign for the rest of the game, I think.

Chelsea's turn to make something happen. Mount swings in a lovely low cross from the right and Aubameyang was ready to meet it had Varane not stretched to block it away for a corner.

It's a fabulous interception given the danger behind him and the risk of knocking it into his own net.

It's fair to say that the match has started nice and open and the latest moment of action is a curling left-footed effort from Antony, from a central position just outside the area.

Initial thinking is that it's going wide but as the bend intensifies, Kepa decides to take no chances, throws himself to the right and touches it safely away.

First shot in anger comes from the occasionally tasty left boot of Luke Shaw.

As is the nature of the game in these early stages, there's a to-and-fro about it, and the full back strides forward and let's fly from the corner edge of Kepa's box. He certainly gets hold of it and it flies just wide of the far post.

An 'oooooohhhh' is heard from the away fans.

A miss-timed interception from Chalobah let's Sancho in on the left but the English winger fails to make anything happen.

Aubameyang then gets freed down Chelsea's attacking left and tries to trouble the defence with a testing ball across the area. It's woeful. Truly, just so bad.

The Blues get themselves a free-kick in their own half after a 'firm' challenge from Antony. Not long after and Cucurella is flying in to a United player.

It's clear Potter has his troops prepared to do the opposite of the midweek Spurs show, aiming to close down space and prevent the likes of Eriksen and Fernamdes getting time on the ball to create.

United, in their home colours of red, white and black have a decent period of opening possession but then Rashford drops back to get involved and his first touch is clumsy, proving Chelsea with a chance to break.

Sterling scampers away and is fed down the left but he's adjudged to have strayed offside.

United get us going, shooting left to right as I look on.

OK, players and officials have gone through the usual acts, and we're all ready.

New bosses collide

Graham Potter and Erik ten Hag are both finding their feet at their respective clubs and today could well be used as a gauge of how well things are going for them.

As I look at the players in the tunnel, I'm leaning towards a home win, but I can't see there being much in it.

We're about 10 minutes away from kick-off and the noise in the stadium is building very close to what we'd expect. A bit of music, a few chants, and the players will be out very soon with their game faces on.

From kipper to a real keeper

Do you remember when the young man with the unpronounceable surname arrived for a world record transfer fee and then proceeded to make a number of clangers? 

Well, despite being effectively replaced by Mendy, Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has proved himself to be integral to his side’s recent resurgence.

The Spaniard has made 12 saves in his last two games, and will today look to put his poor record against Man Utd behind him too.

Cristiano to be hit with astronomical fine

As I said, Cristiano Ronaldo was making the headlines this week - but not for his sporting prowess out on the pitch.

His petulance during the mid-week match against Tottenham did not go unnoticed and the consequences of his action are already being discussed. The Portuguese star got up from the subs’ bench headed straight down the players’ tunnel at Old Trafford before the referee had signaled full-time. In football, such behaviour is viewed as an act of indiscipline.

United took action immediately - Cristiano was sidelined and is playing no part in today's game. But the punishment didn't stop there - he also faces a hefty fine.

Expect that to be my last mention of CR7! (Unless he does something silly on social media during the game, of course)

The last four meetings between the teams have ended all square, while United have an impressive recent record at Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last six visits to West London, with their last defeat there coming back in November 2017.

Put you Rainbow Laces through it!

You may have noticed a colourful theme to much of what is going on in this game and across the Premier League. This is due to the league and all 20 clubs showing their support for LGBTQ+ inclusion by celebrating Stonewall's Rainbow Laces campaign.

All Premier League fixtures between 22 and 30 October will be dedicated to Rainbow Laces. Campaign support will be visible at every stadium and clubs will be demonstrating that football is everyone's game in a variety of ways.

Rainbow-themed captain's armbands will be worn while ball plinths, handshake boards and LED perimeter boards will also highlight important messages.

United team assessment

The big news coming out of the Red Devils’ camp centred, of course, around Cristiano Ronaldo. Ten Hag revealed that the Portuguese star refused to come on as a late substitute in Wednesday’s victory over Spurs, going up the tunnel before the full-time whistle. 

As a result, he has been fined, told to train alone and isn't featuring in this squad.

Fellow attacker Anthony Martial was ruled out due to injury. Harry Maguire returned to training this week but hasn't been named on the bench with Raphaël Varane and Lisandro Martínez very much the first-choice central defensive pairing at the moment in any case.

Christian Eriksen is back in the midfield, and could be a key player today.

Chelsea team assessment

Despite their excellent recent defensive record, Chelsea have been without three regular starters in defensive areas in the shape of Wesley Fofana, Reece James and N’Golo Kanté; none of the trio were available to face United. 

Midfielder Conor Gallagher was forced off in the midweek draw at Brentford because of illness but trained normally on Friday and made it back for a place on today's home bench.

Many will be keen to see how Sterling, formally of Man City, and Aubameyang link up as a strike partnership today.

How it stands

Chelsea

Chelsea have enjoyed an impressive upturn in fortunes since replacing Thomas Tuchel with Graham Potter in the middle of September. The former Brighton boss has taken charge of seven matches in all competitions, winning five and drawing two. After conceding a goal in each of Potter’s first two games against Salzburg and Crystal Palace, the Blues haven’t let any in in their last five. 

Their recent revival has allowed them to move up to fourth place in the table, seven points behind leaders Arsenal and three off Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, who are joint-second.

Manchester United

United sit a point behind Saturday’s opponents and also head into the clash in fine fettle, despite the recent drama surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo (more on him later) and the derby thrashing by City at the start of the month. Since that game, Erik Ten Hag’s men have won four and drawn one of their last five matches, and have emerged victorious in nine of their last 12 fixtures in all competitions.

They’ve posted some big wins at Old Trafford against direct rivals (Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs) but can they repeat the trick on the road?
