Rodrygo Goes, post-match:

I feel important. I am always there for my team. I want to help by scoring, assisting.

I am playing more and it could be my best moment in Madrid.

I have something special with the Champions League.

Rodrygo Goes, Real Madrid

It's a pleasure to be here and I want to continue for a lot of years.

We respect Haaland a lot, and City. It was difficult against them last year. We respect all their players. Anything can happen.

When Ancelotti called me, I thought I was coming off! I was angry!

I am going to speak to Valverde, (about the MVP award) I scored two!

Rodrygo Goes, Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti on his squad's potential:

We are lucky to have so many young players with energy, with quality. It gives us a lot of confidence for the future.

Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid manager

Boehly is on his way to the dressing room!

Pablo Montaño, our AS colleague, says that "Boehly is walking across the Stamford Bridge pitch to talk to the players in the dressing room." Like an angry headteacher.

Rodrygo explains his celebration:

First of all, I was going to slide on my knees to celebrate the goal, but I have a slight swelling so I decided not to. So the idea of my idol, Cristiano, came to mind, so I celebrated like he does.

Rodrygo, Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti post-match

You have to suffer in these games. We had problems in the first half on the left, but we fixed it. It was a complete game, we played at a good level.

It's a deserved win over two legs.

If they went ahead, we might have gotten a bit worried. But Courtois' save helped us and we had more chances in the second half.

I spoke to Rodrygo before the goal about a defensive problem; they were having chances and we spoke.

Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid manager

Militão had a spectacular game; I hope Alaba is fit. He has a problem with his hamstring.

Karim had a problem after taking a hit on the foot. It hurt him, so we changed him.

When we scored, we needed only to defend.

We are thinking only about ourselves. I'm happy for Milan because they are in a semi-final after a long time but I'm sad for Napoli because I like them a lot.

Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid manager

New manager bounce incoming?

as.com

Well, that's that.

Real Madrid are through to yet another Champions League semi-final and Chelsea go out after a spirited yet ultimately futile performance against an opponent that had them at arm's length for most of the tie.

The way Chelsea played was admirable, but you need more than half-chances and wasted mis-kicks to get past Militão, Alaba and, of course, Courtois.

as.com

(Aggregate: 0-4)

as.com
90+3

And that's the end of the game!

Real Madrid are through to their 11th Champions League semi-final in 13 years!

as.com
90+3

Asensio opens out wide to Vinicius, who takes one touch too many and is seen off by the Chelsea defence, who would like very much not to concede again.

as.com
90+2

Chelsea, bless them, are still attacking. Camavinga has found his class again and caresses a ball out of play for a goal kick.

as.com
90

3 added minutes.

as.com
90

João Félix hits a shot from the edge of the box but it went that far over the bar I'm not sure Opta can count it as an attempt at scoring a goal.

as.com
90

And Mudryk goes into the ref's book for a late slide challenge on Modric.

as.com
90

We're into the final minute of the match...

as.com

He was offside anyway, but my word, what a huge miss from Mudryk. The Ukrainian was one vs one with Courtois and, from the edge of the six-yard box on the left side, dragged a poor effort wide of the goal at the near post.

as.com
88

WHAT A MISS FROM MUDRYK!

as.com
87

Kepa saves a one vs one but Vinicius was offside as he got on the ball from Asensio.

as.com

Asensio ON

Rodrygo OFF

as.com
85

Madrid are in cruise control here, Chelsea look defeated, as the scoreline would suggest.

as.com

The Uruguayan got on the end of a loose ball but his cross was stopped by Kepa, who dived out of his goal like an electrified cat.

as.com
83

MADRID GO CLOSE WITH VALVERDE!

as.com
82

Chelsea attack with Félix, who tries to do everything himself and score 5 goals with one shot.

His effort is easily blocked by Militão and the rebound from Mudryk is saved by Courtois.

Carvajal OFF

Nacho ON

And the Chelsea fans pile out of the stadium.

A long ball over the top landed at Vinicius who played it to Fede Valverde on his right.

The Uruguayan skipped past Mudryk and Silva inside the six-yard box before sliding a wonderful ball to his right where Rodrygo was waiting on his own to take a touch, tease the fans, and tap into the back of the net.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

REAL MADRID MAKE IT TWO

as.com
78

The game has got quite scrappy very quickly here, as Chelsea look to play crazy football with no structure, and Madrid just want to keep the ball. We've seen a few passes go astray over the past minutes, partly through nerves, partly through fatigue.

Vinicius broke through the middle after a lovely pass from deep, but Mudryk, who is probably the only player who can keep up with the Brazilian, scorched back to defend and clear the ball as the Madrid man made it into the box.

75

WHAT A CHANCE FOR REAL MADRID!!!

as.com
73

Madrid recover well after Chelsea counter through João Félix, with Tchouaméni winning the ball back excellently before the Portuguese attacker could look up to strike at goal.

as.com
72

Chelsea have had 54% of the ball so far, and they look like the team most likely to score now, winning corner after corner. But we all know what happened the last time I said this...

Benzema OFF

Tchouaméni ON

Ancelotti is shutting up shop here. Modric now has the armband.

as.com
70

Nope, nothing, nada. The referee waves play on. As you were.

as.com

It looks like he might have been tripped by Modric.

as.com
69

Havertz has gone down in the box... a possible penalty?

as.com
68

Militão sends the ball out for a corner after blocking a dangerous shot from James on the edge of the box.

as.com
67

Gallagher, Enzo and Cucurella OFF

JoãoFélix, Sterling and Mudryk ON

You're three-nil down, Frank.

as.com
66

The game is even but incredibly comfortable for Madrid, who have a 3-0 lead overall. Chelsea continue to push, but they know that their task is herculean.

as.com
66

Kepa's turn to make a save: he keeps out Benzema's effort from inside the box after Vini Jr had slipped through three challenges from Chelsea defenders.

as.com
65

Courtois saves Enzo's shot from a ball that bounces inside the box. Child's play for the Belgian.

as.com
64

If I were Frank Lampard, I'd throw on a few of the multi-million pound attacking players on from the bench.

as.com
63

Chelsea have nothing to lose now (except the game and the tie and a potential place in European competition next season, of course), so they're deciding simply to throw eleven players forward and see what sticks.

as.com

By the way, just so you know, Rodrygo did that slightly silly Cristiano Ronaldo siiiuuu celebration. Any ideas why? Let me know on Twitter @j4brennan, because I have no clue.

as.com
60

We're back underway. Chelsea with a Madrid-sized mountain to climb.

as.com

And that's how they get you. Just when you think you have the upper hand, along comes Madrid's hook in the jaw.

Rodrygo broke away behind Cucurella and played a cross that fell to Vini on the left. The winger tried a shot that was blocked and the ball fell to Rodrygo, who had followed up his ball into the box, where he smashed it past Kepa from close range.

as.com

Rodrygo puts Madrid ahead!

as.com

(0-3 agg.)

as.com
58

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL

REAL MADRID GO ONE NIL UP AT STAMFORD BRIDGE

as.com
57

Chelsea are pushing and perhaps finding their feet: this time it's Havertz who skips past Rüdiger and manages to fire a shot into Courtois' hands.

as.com
56

Kroos goes in a teeny bit too high on Kovacic and gets away without a booking. A very lucky man, in my opinion.

as.com
55

Enzo (yes, he's on the pitch) has a shot from distance that he spoons wide of the goal.

as.com
54

Militão is penalised for a challenge down the wing on Chalobah. Lampard is going crazy on the touchline, saying that it should be a second yellow, but the referee says no.

as.com

Militão headed away a cross from Havertz and Gallagher's rebound landed at the feet of Kanté, but his shot smacked back off Militão and flew wide!

as.com
52

ANOTHER HUGE CHANCE FOR KANTÉ!

as.com

James gets a very orange-looking yellow card after going in hard on Camavinga.

as.com
49

The half has started in a quite even manner but without any major slip-ups so far. Both teams are pressing the other just as heavily and creating half-chances.

as.com

By the way, here's why we haven't seen Pulisic feature for Chelsea...

as.com
47

Chalobah heads over Kroos' free-kick from the wide position out on the left.

as.com
46

Madrid break from the right and Militão slips last Kovacic before finding Benzema.

Vinicius takes the ball from the Frenchman but is fouled by Fofana on the edge of the box.

as.com

And we're off for the second half at Stamford Bridge!

Madrid kick the final 45 minutes off.

as.com

Bad news, Madrid fans: due to an accumulation of yellow cards, Éder Militão is out of the first leg of the semi-final should Madrid qualify.

Real Madrid will certainly be looking for more control in the second half...

Half-time summary:

Overall, Chelsea will be happy with that performance, despite Madrid having a late flurry of chances.

The home team have looked lively and up for a battle in the press against Madrid, yet the scoreline is still even. Lampard will be hoping that he does not come to regret those missed chances that Chelsea have had.

Courtois will be walking around shirtless (maybe) at half-time, as his save is something to be proud of: Cucurella has a new figure to place in the centre of his dartboard.

As for Madrid, they have kind of done what they always do: look like conceding seconds before they look like scoring.

It will be a big task for Chelsea to keep up the pressure, and an even bigger one for them to make a mark on the scoreline. Let's see!

as.com

HT: 0-2 aggregate

as.com
45+2

Half-time!

as.com

Chelsea break, again, down the right.

James fires in a low cross that Madrid's entire defence miss, allowing Cucurella to have a free shot on goal from the left. He smacks the ball towards goal and SOMEHOW Courtois gets his body in the way from just a couple of yards from goal.

as.com

IT'S ALWAYS HIM

as.com
45+1

WHAT A SAVE FROM THIBAUT COURTOIS!

as.com
45

2 added minutes.

as.com
44

Kai Havertz has had a huge influence on the game so far; Madrid need to find a way to stop him if they don't want his impact changing the scoreboard.

as.com
43

Madrid with another chance!!

Valverde breaks down the right and his cross to the far post is met by Benzema, but the Frenchman's volley is just wide.

as.com

Carvajal played Modric down the right and the Croatian hit a cross towards Vinicius, who is just yards from goal, but the ball flies wide! Fofana's presence put off the winger who scuffed his shot from close range.

as.com
41

WHAT A CHANCE FOR VINICIUS!!!

as.com
39

Camavinga gets sat on the floor by Kanté who burns past him down the left. The Frenchman springs back onto his feet and throw his body at the ball, forcing it out for a corner.

as.com
38

Madrid break with Modric but his pass is too weak to find Vinicius who is racing down the left side. That was a great opportunity to catch Chelsea off-guard but James did well to intercept.

as.com
37

James gets behind the Madrid left-back and forces Alaba to clear his ferocious cross.

as.com
36

Ten to go before half-time... Chelsea are now pushing to take the advantage.

as.com
34

Cucurella booked for having terrible hair.

Oh, no, maybe it was because he brought down Rodrygo on the counter attack.

as.com

Los Blancos are slowly turning it on now: Modric received the ball inside the box down the right and hit a low shot towards Kepa from a tight angle that was saved.

as.com
33

MODRIC WITH A CHANCE!

as.com
32

Karim Benzema has a shot from the edge of the box that he hits into the ground and it bobbles towards Kepa.

The Chelsea fans laugh, perhaps feeling more grateful than anything.

as.com

The referee game offside after the event as Cucurella was in an advanced position as the ball came over the top of the Madrid defence. Another warning for Carlo Ancelotti's side.

as.com

He heads over the bar from just yards out!

as.com
30

WHAT A HUGE CHANCE FOR GALLAGHER!

as.com
29

Chelsea attack with Havertz and Cucurella on the left, but the cross is too high and Madrid see it out of the other side of the pitch.

as.com
28

Luka Modric is doing that thing again where he runs around and appears 21-years-old, just to make us all feel bad.

as.com
27

The Brazilian broke behind the Chelsea defence and fired a rocket straight at Kepa... but he was offside.

as.com
27

KEPA SAVES FROM VINICIUS!

as.com
26

Real Madrid are really having to use all their rondo skills to play through the Chelsea press, who are running rabid around the pitch.

The crowd are definitely doing their job of pushing the team on.

as.com
24

He's up and running and so is the game.

as.com
23

Militão is down holding his foot.

as.com
23

Chelsea are finding lots of space behind Madrid's full-backs...

as.com
22

The first card of the game goes to Éder Militão, who clatters into Gallagher like a freight train running over a rabbit as Chelsea break away.

as.com

The Brazilian skipped past Chalobah inside the box after receiving the ball from Carvajal on the right, his shot was hit hard but smacked off Kepa's left post.

as.com
20

SO CLOSE FROM RODRYGO!

OFF THE POST!

as.com
18

Rodrygo breaks away and Chalobah follows him. The Madrid winger forces a cross in from the right that is cleared.

as.com
18

Some more curious defending from Madrid as Chelsea arrive in the danger zone again; this time it's Carvajal who allows the ball from the right to bounce and Courtois sweeps it up.

as.com
17

Chelsea win a corner after good work from Cucurella. Madrid are on the ropes at the moment...

as.com
15

Kovacic is being allowed to dictate the play in the middle of the park: time and time again he is taking the ball on his right foot with time and space, easily able to pick out James down Madrid's right side.

as.com

It is Reece James this time, who gets on the end of a ball from Havertz in the box, who is allowed to advance to the byline with no issues whatsoever.

Luckily for Madrid, the right-back's touch is slightly too heavy and Los Blancos manage to recover their positions.

as.com
14

Chelsea come close again!

as.com
13

Real Madrid really got away with a close call there. That was simple defending errors from the team that allowed an easy ball over the top and into a dangerous area behind Camavinga.

as.com

The ball broke to the right and was fired across goal. It bounced in front of the midfielder who was alone on the penalty spot... yet he somehow managed to mangle a wayward shot past Courtois' goal!

as.com

How on Earth did he put that wide?!

as.com
11

WHAT A HUGE CHANCE MISSED BY KANTÉ!!!

as.com
8

Carvajal does brilliant well to race back and cut out a Gallagher pass after the Englishman was gifted the ball by a lazy pass from Luka Modric that landed at his feet.

That is exactly the sort of thing Real Madrid can't afford to start doing tonight.

as.com
7

Vini Jr skips past Reece James and fires in a cross that whizzes over the head of Benzema. Madrid are slowly looking more confident with the ball...

as.com
7

He's OK to carry on for now. Back underway.

as.com
6

Alarm noises! Benzema is down after an awkward landing from a jump.

as.com
5

Chalobah does well to smother Rodrygo, who looked like he was about to go full-octopus and squeeze through an incredibly small gap down the wing.

as.com

It'sLosalmost-Blancos tonight, as Madrid are in dark socks for the game. Here's why...

as.com
3

A big cheer from the Chelsea supporters as a slow pass is played back to Courtois, who gathers easily.

Chelsea have started with lots of early energy, the question will be whether or not they can keep it up.

as.com
2

No team can keep the ball in the opening seconds; we've had more throw-ins from loose balls than frown lines on Lampard's concerned expression.

The ever-growing influence of Camavinga...

The French left-back/centre-midfielder has already started more games in the 22/23 season than he did in the whole of the previous campaign.

He has performed brilliantly in his new defensive role, with the apex performance coming against FC Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg. Will he have a similarly stellar night tonight at Stamford Bridge?

It's just a shame that a) he doesn't like playing at left-back and b) Ancelotti loves him at left-back.

How things have looked for both sides over the course of the European campaign:

Chelsea's goals conceded is actually slightly lower than the European champion's number, but the goals scored stats from Los Blancos are in another world.

Madrid have more shots, more big chances, win more duels and, crucially, win more games.

And then there's the indescribable factor that the white shirt has; as Rüdiger says, it scares the opponents who play against them.

Frank Lampard pre-game quotes:

Anything is possible in football and there’s no doubt that we’re a competitive team and we deserve to be here in this stage of the competition.

We also understand that the opponent is really high-level, but if we get things right, if we work hard, if we do the right things in the game, then anything is possible

Frank Lampard, Chelsea manager

I’ve got no doubt the atmosphere will be positive. When I say that, I’m talking about the lead-up to the game and the start of the game, the rest is a little bit down to us as a team to play with a real desire and know-how to turn the tie around.

I’ve been here too many times at this level of game at Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on an evening midweek Champions League knock-out game, so I understand that the atmosphere is going to be great.

Frank Lampard, Chelsea manager

Then it’s up to us to tap into that early in the game and make sure we engage the crowd throughout because they can help us when we’re at home. That’s why this two-legged competition is the best out there. I’m confident in that, we just need to play our part.

Frank Lampard, Chelsea manager

Two Madrid players are on the verge of being suspended for the semi-final first leg if they get a yellow card tonight, so the question remains:

Are they the players that I have included in the photo? You know what you have to do to find out...

as.com

Will this be the last starball Chelsea see this season?

Or will they find a way to turn around the huge 2 goal deficit against the Kings of Europe?

No team has ever won two Champions League games against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, so there's at least some hope.

Carlo Ancelotti. pre-match quotes:

The starting XI is very difficult to choose. You can have an idea one day and then the players who don't play a lot have a good game and change your mind.

This is a squad that makes me change my mind a lot. Thinking about eleven players shows a lack of respect to those who don't play a lot.

Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid manager

I think [Chelsea club president, Todd Boehly, going to the changing room to speak to the players] can motivate the squad.

They're not going through a good moment at Chelsea and this could inspire them.

If our president came down after every game I'd be fine with it. He has a right to know the decisions of the coach.

Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid manager

In terms of history, Madrid is the king of this competition and we are a part of that.

We would like to make the history even bigger.

Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid manager

JESUS ALVAREZ ORIHUELA / DIARIO AS

Who to watch: Rodrygo

The Brazilian winger started on the left of the Madrid from three against Cádiz and although he didn’t get his name on the scoresheet, Rodrygo put in an incredibly impressive performance in the south of Spain.

The juxtaposition of Rodrygo completing 8/13 dribbles (the most on the pitch) while winning 10/18 ground duels (the most on the pitch) shows both sides of his game are taken very seriously and the player contributes in more ways than one.

Vinicius is undroppable, so don’t expect to see him in the same role tonight, but if he takes 1% of the form we saw against Cádiz into the game at Stamford Bridge, Carlo’s side could be in for some more fun against Frank and co.

JAVIER SORIANO / AFP

How the first leg went...

You know how it went. But if you don't, it was as horrible for Chelsea as everyone except Todd Boehly expected.

Real Madrid ran out 2-0 winners in a comfortable affair that saw goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio seal the deal. Frank Lampard cut a lonely figure on the Bernabéu sideline and a recent loss to Brighton means he is still winless after 3 games in charge.

Madrid can’t afford to be complacent tonight, as magical things can happen in the Champions League, but it is a colossal mountain to climb for the London side if they want to get through to the semi-final.

as.com

Team news: Chelsea

N´Golo Kanté and Thiago Silva are all available after being rested against Brighton. Havertz is back but Koulibaly is out with an injury, as is Chilwell, who is suspended after receiving a red card after an hour in the first leg.

Team news: Real Madrid

Again, Ferland Mendyis the only long-term absentee in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad for the game.
