Chivas vs América

Chivas

Saturday’s hosts, Chivas Guadalajara, endured a disappointing Torneo Apertura before the World Cup break and will be looking to improve on their ninth-place finish this campaign. They have begun the Torneo Clausura in better form and currently sit fourth on goal difference, a point and a place above rivals América.

Chivas have picked up 21 points from their opening 11 games, leaving them tied with two other teams seven points adrift of league leaders Monterrey.

In comparison to the sides around them in the league, Chivas have struggled for goals this season and central midfielder Víctor Guzmán is this current top goalscorer with five goals. They will hope forward Roberto Alvarado, who has yet to score in ten appearances, can get off the mark this weekend.

América

In stark contrast to Chivas, América boast one of Liga MX’s most potent forwards in Henry Martín. The 29-year-old has scored ten times and recorded three assists in just 11 matches since the start of Torneo Clausura and Chivas will have to keep him quiet if they want to secure a win at home.

América are currently the league’s highest-scoring side and they secured an impressive 2-0 win at Tigres last Saturday.

Fernando Ortiz made a number of key changes after a comprehensive defeat to Pachuca the week before that appeared to shore up the side’s defensive stability. Sebastian Caceres and Emilio Lara returned to bolster the backline and young goalkeeper Emilio Lara was given his first start for the club.

If Ortiz manages to strengthen the defence without losing any offensive potency, América could become one of the most feared sides in the league.

Chivas vs América prediction

This season Chivas have proved a tough nut to crack but América’s firepower and new-found defensive capabilities should tip the game in their favour.

Prediction: Chivas 1-2 América
