What happened to Eriksen at Euro 2020?
The episode brought back horrific memories of what happened to the Danish star at Euro 2020. During a group stage match against Finland, Eriksen’s heart stopped for roughly five minutes and the Denmark medical team was needed to save his life.
The intervention of his teammate Simon Kjaer was crucial that day, preventing him from choking on his tongue and placing him in the recovery position.
“Christian was dead for a moment. How close were we to that? I don’t know. I can’t answer the details of why it happened. We had to start with cardiac massage and resuscitation because he had gone. It all happened in a moment, so I don’t really know what to say. There was a cardiac arrest and he was revived with a shock from a defibrillator,” confessed Morten Boesen, the Danish team doctor at the time. Eriksen underwent surgery to have an internal defibrillator implanted.
