Clásico Capitalino heats up: Can Pumas capitalize on América’s injury crisis?
Matchday 12 of the Clausura 2026 features the visit of the 'Azulcrema' team to CU. We break down the current state of this great rivalry.
This Saturday, March 21, Liga MX takes center stage with one of the standout fixtures of the regular season: Club América visiting Pumas UNAM at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, part of Matchday 12 of the Clausura 2026 tournament.
Although both teams sit relatively close in the standings, the vibes around them couldn’t be more different. Pumas come in as the slight favorite thanks to their recent form, but when it’s a Clásico Capitalino, all logic tends to go out the window. André Jardine’s América have won their last two meetings, and with all the added tension surrounding this rivalry, everything points to a true blockbuster.
Absences for both teams
Pumas
The home side will be without Nathan Silva, who was sent off with a second yellow card in the match against Cruz Azul. His suspension is a major blow for Efraín Juárez, as the Brazilian defender has been one of his untouchables. Also on the unavailable list is José Juan Macías, who remains in a long recovery process, though he is officially registered for the tournament.
América
The visitors have a much longer list of absences. Jardine will be missing Luis Ángel Malagón, Víctor Dávila, Dagoberto Espinoza, Isaias Violante, and Henry Martín — all due to injury. Violante and Martín are the only ones with a realistic chance of returning in the coming weeks for the final stretch of the regular season. The other three will remain sidelined for a considerable period.
Players to Watch
Pumas — Juninho
The Brazilian striker, who arrived this season, has quickly become the team’s main scoring threat with five goals. Much of Pumas’ attacking hopes rest on what the 29‑year‑old can produce.
América — Brian Rodríguez
The Uruguayan winger has carried América’s depleted attack thanks to his pace and dribbling. “Rayito” is in good physical condition and has been decisive, though he has yet to score against Pumas — in five meetings, he has only managed one assist.
