Past the hour mark and still no goals at the Azteca as we are poised to see the first changes of the contest.

as.com

Martin goes to ground inside the box as Ortiz tackles the America striker.

Nothing going for the referee and that seems to be the correct call.

as.com

Rodriguez does well for America in taking the ball to the byline and Pumas scramble the ball away from the danger zone.

The Uruguayan looks dangerous each time he is on the ball but has been too quiet in the contest so far.

as.com

A draw to be honest is not a bad result for either side. Both teams want the win but a draw would ease America towards the second place and help Pumas in their quest for post season football.

as.com

Cesar Huerta is really coming into the contest and wins a free kick as Del Prete is carded for complaining.

as.com

Gonzalez in the Pumas goal has had little to do in the first half with both sides delivering 2 shots on target in the first half.

Pumas set to get the action underway.

as.com

Club America 0-0 Pumas

Deadlock at the Azteca at half time

as.com

A game that is high on intensity and passion but still to really catch fire.

America are on top and have enjoyed more possession but it's the university side that have created the better chances with Argentine striker Dinneno annoyed that he hasn't put Pumas ahead.

A big 45' ahead and a point (as things stand) that sees America recover second place and would help Pumas in their quest to seal a top 12 spot.

as.com
as.com

The whistle sounds and it is goalless at the break.

as.com
47

So close as Dinenno heads inches wide from a Pumas corner. The Argentine holds his head in his hands and that was the best chance of the game so far.

as.com

Four minutes of time to be added.

as.com
45

Martin does well and creates space on the edge of the box but screws his shot wide.

as.com

Pumas boss Mohamed is red carded.

The Argentine obviously said something and the ref has had enough.

as.com

Antonio Mohamed will be the happier of the two managers as his side have looked comfortable despite being outclassed in terms of possession.

as.com
40

Last five of the half and the intensity of the game has dipped ever so slightly in the past 5/10 minutes.

as.com

Pumas fans silence Azteca

The Goya chant once again rings out at the Azteca from the visiting fans located in the upper tier at the iconic stadium.

as.com
34

Heading towards the interval and despite America's domination of the ball, it's the visitors who have enjoyed the better of the scoring chances.

as.com
29

Pumas break and fail to end the move as America rob the ball and launch a counter offensive which ends in a corner for the home side.

Plenty of space opening now on the vast Azteca pitch.

as.com
24

Just as it looks like America are set to totally dominate, Pumas break and Dinneno has two bites of the cherry but America keeper Malagon stands his ground to deny the Argentine striker.

Shots on target: America 2-1 Pumas

as.com

Zendejas pulled back and another dangerous free for America.

Wonderful strike from Sanchez and the ball goes inches wide.

as.com
16

America well on top as the create a series of half chances without really testing Gonzalez.

Pumas being pegged back and looking to create trouble on the break.

as.com

Valdes does well and gets the ball in space after excellent work from Rodriguez.

A clash of heads between Zendejas and Monroy and the game is held up as both players are attended to.

as.com

Pumas boss Mohamed is carded as he complains about a series of decisions.

as.com
9

First decent effort of the night falls to Pumas as Huerta fires the ball but Malagon is alert and tips the ball wide.

as.com

Caicedo carded as he impedes an America man (Henry Martin) running through on goal. It did look like Palermo was the man who committed the infringement.

Layun takes the free kick but blazes over.

as.com

America enjoying the better of the opening phase of the contest.

as.com

Free for America and Valdes has a go from range but the wall does its job and Pumas avert the danger.

Pumas

Pumas have struggled massively in the Clausura 2023 and are in danger of missing out on the playoffs for the second straight Liga MX tournament. However they come into this derby game on a good run of recent form.

After a run of just two wins in their first 12 games, Los Universitarios sacked head coach Rafael Puente del Río in March, replacing him with three-time Mexican title winner Antonio Mohamed.

In his first game in charge Mohamed led Pumas to a 3-1 win over Atlético San Luis and followed that up by beating third-place Toluca by the same scoreline. Pumas are now up to 12th with those wins, just within the play-off places, and will want to continue their promising run against América on Saturday.

as.com

Club America

Bidding to lift their first Liga MX title since the Apertura 2018, Las Águilas have lost just once in the current tournament - and have bounced back with four wins out of five since that 3-0 defeat to Pachuca in early March. In their last outing they swept aside Cruz Azul in another Mexico City derby, beating them 3-1 away from home.

This weekend they face Pumas in the Clásico Capitolino and Fernando Ortiz can call upon one of the finest attacking talents in Liga MX. Henry Martin has scored 13 times in 15 appearances in this year’s Clausura, with three goals and two assists in his last four games.

Pumas have been better under new coach Mohamed and currently hold the 12th place which would see the university side secure a place in the post season. A win would guarantee a place in the repechaje and any other result would leave their fate to be decided on the final matchday next weekend.
