On the final matchday of the Clausura 2023 regular season, Club América visit Juárez, a side they have never lost to on the road. In four trips to the Estadio Olímpico Benito Juárez, Las Águilas have won twice and drawn twice.

What do América need to qualify for playoffs proper?

In Friday’s clash, América know that a point will be enough to secure a top-four finish and direct qualification for the playoffs proper.

Barring a huge goal-difference swing, a win for Fernando Ortiz’s men will make sure of second place ahead of arch rivals Chivas Guadalajara. Third-placed Chivas are level on points with América, but are seven goals worse off.

If América lose to Juárez, they could still slip out of the automatic playoff spots, although this appears unlikely: fifth-placed Pachuca are three points behind with a significantly inferior goal difference.

What result do Juárez need?

As for Juárez, the hosts must win to have any hope of reaching the postseason’s preliminary round, and will need results elsewhere to go their way.

América trio to miss Juárez trip

Bravos’ cause is helped by the fact that América will be missing Jonathan Rodríguez, Federico Viñas and Néstor Araujo, who have all remained in Mexico City. Of the trio, only Rodríguez is a starter for the 13-time domestic champions, but Viñas and Araujo have both been regularly used as substitutes in recent games.

Having been brought on for Rodríguez against Pumas on matchday 16, Roger Martínez is in line to replace the Uruguayan in the XI, albeit Brian Rodríguez is also a contender to take the 29-year-old’s place.

América’s possible line-up against Juárez:

Goalkeeper: Luis Malagón

Defenders: Luis Fuentes, Sebastián Cáceres, Israel Reyes and Miguel Layún

Midfielders: Álvaro Fidalgo, Diego Valdés and Richard Sánchez

Forwards: Alejandro Zendejas, Henry Martín and Roger Martínez
