The United States Women’s National Team steps into the 2024 Women’s Gold Cup, CONCACAF’s latest incarnation of its premier women’s international tournament – four CONMEBOL guests added – with much to prove. Four years ago, the USWNT were victorious in Mexico, beating Canada in the final of the federation’s Women’s Championship but since then things haven’t been so positive, struggling to make any real impression at the 2023 World Cup, falling in the round of 16.

An opening day fixture against either Guyana or the Dominican Republic will be followed by games against Argentina and Mexico in Group A, with the three groups of four providing us with the eight teams for the quarterfinals (winners, runners-up and best two third placed).

The tournament runs through until the final which is set for 10 March at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California, where the W Gold Cup champion will be crowned. As the tournament begins, this is how the rankings sit.

CONCACAF Top 10:

  1. United States - 5,457
  2. Canada - 4,039
  3. Costa Rica - 3,275
  4. Jamaica - 3,177
  5. Mexico - 2,495
  6. Panama - 2,171

World rankings for Women’s soccer

The four CONMEBOL nations invited – Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Paraguay – will certainly add an extra element of competitiveness, although not to the degree of the European teams that feature in the World Cups.

While Spain top FIFA’s rankings, and France, England, Sweden and Germany come in behind second-placed USWNT, Brazil are in 11th. Colombia at currently rated 23rd, while Argentina and Paraguay come in at 31st and 50th respectively. For reference, Canada sit 10th and Mexico 35th.

Following on from the W Gold Cup, the US Women’s team will go into the SheBelieves Cup in April – as will Brazil and Canada, along with Japan – and then to the Olympic Games in the French capital, Paris.
