If there was even a 1% chance before, it’s now officially 0%: Kylian Mbappé will not play in the first leg against Manchester City. It’s a reality that’s been looming for days, and today it was simply confirmed. He didn’t step onto the pitch for the final training session. End of story. Well: more like a comma than a period: his availability for next return at the Etihad is also in doubt. That’s the objective; the club is working around the clock. But the rule is clear: he’ll only return when he’s at 100%. And being at 100% next week… that’s complicated. Not impossible, but complicated. Step by step. For now, he’s out tomorrow. That much is certain.

A knee injury that has dogged Mbappé for months

His issue goes back to when he hurt his knee on December 7. Ninety‑three days ago, against Celta Vigo. A bad landing, a wrong twist; then the pain. Since then he’s been dealing with discomfort that has significantly limited him. He’s been playing without being at full strength. More surviving than performing. He wasn’t right. During this stretch, we’ve seen episodes like him being ruled out of the Spanish Super Cup… only to make a last‑minute trip for the final, or Álvaro Arbeloa’s “he’s ready to play tomorrow” before the Benfica match. That was precisely the day everything shifted into another gear - or down several, depending on how you look at it.

During Madrid’s defeat to Osasuna late last month, Mbappé had practically no acceleration - one of the signatures of his game. You could say he hit rock bottom with this injury. He looked off; he wasn’t himself. And that same afternoon, the decision was made: stop until fully recovered. He has an issue with the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee, and the situation was entering dangerous territory. Resting had become a matter of health. And that’s exactly what’s happening. Today marks two weeks since his indefinite pause began. During that time, he traveled to France for a second medical opinion - which fully backed Real Madrid’s own diagnosis - and to receive treatment there with two members of the club’s staff: a fitness coach and a physiotherapist.

Back in Madrid

He returned to Madrid on Sunday and has continued his rehab in the capital ever since. He knew playing the first leg against City was a pipe dream, but he’s holding out hope for the Etihad on Mar. 17. We’ll see. That’s still the goal. Today he didn’t train with the squad, confirming what had become an open secret: he won’t be on the Bernabéu pitch tomorrow. He will be in the stands, in a box, watching the match, supporting his teammates. For now, he remains out. His mind is already on next Tuesday. On trying.

At a glance - Real Madrid’s first-leg absentees against Manchester City:

  • David Alaba: calf
  • Jude Bellingham: hamstring
  • Álvaro Carreras: calf
  • Dani Ceballos: calf
  • Rodrygo Goes: ACL
  • Kylian Mbappé: knee
  • Éder Militão: hamstring
