This Thursday, the CONMEBOL Refereeing Commission announced the appointments for the third and final match day of the group stage for both Groups A and B.

Match day 3 will mark the end of the opening phase of the tournament and will set us up with our quarter-final teams, as well as providing us with the clashes. This cut-throat nature of the tournament means that the stakes are high for many teams as the final 3 points on offer are hugely important: literally the definition of life and death in the tournament.

As for Argentina, while their game against Peru (Saturday, 29 June 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT.) may not be life or death, it is certainly a chance for some fresher legs to come in and showcase their skills for manager Lionel Scaloni.

Who is the referee for Argentina - Peru in Copa América?

The Commission report confirmed that the refereeing group for Argentina vs Peru will be the following:

  • Main official: César Ramos (MEX)
  • Assistant 1: Alberto Morín (MEX)
  • Assistant 2: Marco Bisguerra (MEX)
  • Fourth referee: Alexis Herrera (VEN)
  • Fifth referee: Lubin Torrealba (VEN)
  • VAR: Guillermo Pacheco (MEX)
  • AVAR: Érick Miranda (MEX)

Messi likely to miss Peru test

This match, however, does not pose a threat for Argentina’s tournament status as they are already qualified for the quarter-finals: a draw would be enough to secure first place of group. However, on the other side of the halfway line, Peru are very much playing for their lives, with a win for them and a draw between Canada and Chile the only way they can secure second place in the group.

The Peruvians have been handed a boost, however, as Lionel Messi currently looks extremely unlikely to feature for the world champions. Messi has been nursing a muscle injury for a period of months at his club side, Inter Miami, and is set to sit out this clash in preparation for Argentina’s quarter-final game next week.

TyC Sports reported that the captain will undergo tests to determine the extent of his injury on Thursday, which will be the decisive day for Lionel Messi at Argentina’s training camp in Miami. The side will try to out a more serious issue that could compromise his participation in the tournament.

The 2024 Copa América Group A game between Argentina and Peru will be played on Saturday, 29 June 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT.
