Deputising for regular goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero, Andrés Sánchez was a revelation in Atlético San Luis’s Clausura 2023 quarter-final with Club América. The 25-year-old’s performances were praised by media and fans alike, and he is now reportedly in the frame for a move to Liga MX giants Chivas Guadalajara.

According to the Mexican media outlet Universal Deportes, Chivas are preparing to sound San Luis out about Sánchez’s availability.

Sánchez impresses despite América defeat

The keeper made just one appearance in the Clausura 2023 regular season, in San Luis’s 3-1 loss to Pumas on matchday 14. Having replaced the injured Barovero in the postseason, however, Sánchez helped André Jardine’s men to a 3-1 win over Club León in the preliminary round, before excelling in the last eight despite his team’s defeat to América.

In the second leg at the Estadio Azteca, Sánchez made several key saves as San Luis threatened to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit and advance to the semi-finals. However, Brian Rodríguez’s late goal for América sealed a 4-3 aggregate triumph for the 13-time Mexican champions.

Quarter-final displays earn Liga MX accolade

In all, Sánchez made 17 saves in the quarter-final tie. One of his most notable stops came late in the second leg, with the aggregate scoreline at 3-3 and San Luis just a goal away from eliminating their hosts. Receiving the ball outside the penalty area, América’s Álvaro Fidalgo connected with a thunderous shot, only for Sánchez to prevent a stunning goal with a flying save.

Thanks to his outstanding performances, he was named by the Liga MX as the outstanding goalkeeper in the quarter-finals.
