He may be the biggest sporting name in Saudi Arabia right now but he’s got himself into a little bother with the football authorities and is having to justify his actions. The Saudi press, specifically the Arriyadhiah outlet, has revealed Cristiano Ronaldo’s statement before the Ethics and Discipline Committee of the Saudi Arabian football league. The Al Nassr forward has played down the controversial celebration that caused a stir, stating that such gestures are often common when scoring a goal (he did so after converting a penalty) and that it was not directed towards the opposing fans, let alone as a gesture of mockery or provocation.

Ronaldo defends his actions

“I respect all clubs... and the arm movement expresses strength and victory and is by no means shameful or obscene. In Europe, we are accustomed to that,” the Saudi outlet quotes Cristiano. The Committee wanted to hear from the player before making a judgment on whether the Portuguese forward committed any irregularity in his celebration.

Ronaldo could face a two-game suspension, but for now, it is not known if the Committee considers him guilty. His coach Luís Castro continues with the usual preparation and has included the Portuguese star in the list of players called up for Thursday’s match against Al Hazem. This suggests that he does not expect any punishment for his number ‘7′.
