The debate over which of the two greatest footballers of this century is superior spans continents. After a fan was photographed mimicking Lionel Messi’s iconic celebration (hands over ears), the image went viral, prompting Al Nassr to publicly call for respect toward the club.

The Cristiano Ronaldo-Messi rivalry has, since it began on the pitch, sparked unforeseen controversies, though neither player intended it. This incident is not the first time a fan has shown up at First Park Stadium, Ronaldo’s new home, imitating one of the Argentine’s gestures.

In a statement, the Saudi Pro League club said:

“We would like to point out that Al Nassr Club has always welcomed its visitors, fans, and supporters. Throughout its long history, our doors have been open to all. However, the recent individual (irresponsible) actions inside the dressing room at First Park Stadium are unacceptable. Some people fail to recognise the significance of the team they represent, as well as the club’s heritage. They disrespected our fans.

“We want to clarify that Al Nassr Club Company has instructed the relevant internal departments to address the matter immediately, ensuring the club’s literary, moral, and material rights are preserved. We reaffirm that our doors and facilities remain open to all fans, provided they adhere to proper conduct.”

This statement refers to Saudi influencer Abu Omar, who, during a stadium tour, stood in front of Ronaldo’s dressing room to mimic Messi’s celebration from the 2022 World Cup match against the Netherlands. According to the YouTuber’s own video, he intended it as a joke, seeing other tour members copying Ronaldo’s iconic celebrations.

Abu Omar later apologised to Al Nassr fans on his X account, saying: “I apologise if the photo offended you. It was meant as a joke, and I made a mistake.”
