Cruz Azul have confirmed that Ramiro Funes Mori is to leave the Liga MX club following their elimination from the Clausura 2023 postseason.

“Thank you very much for everything,” Cruz Azul said in a social-media message to Funes Mori on Tuesday. “We wish you the best of success in the future.”

The defender, 32, is out of contract at the nine-time Mexican champions at the end of June.

Leaves Cruz Azul after nine months at club

Signed from Saudi side Al Nassr in August 2022, amid a defensive injury crisis at the club, Funes Mori was unable to reproduce his best form for Cruz Azul, who were beaten by Atlas in the preliminary round of the Clausura 2023 playoffs.

The Argentinian, who has 26 international caps, made 25 appearances in all competitions for Cruz Azul, scoring one goal.

Argentina return on the cards for Funes Mori?

Funes Mori, whose twin brother Rogelio is a striker for fellow Mexican outfit Monterrey, has been linked with a return to Argentinian club River Plate. The centre-back, who has also played in England and Spain for Everton and Villarreal, respectively, began his senior career at River.
