Update:

The race to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup final is already taking shape, and while the tournament itself will span multiple countries and continents, the biggest match of all is quickly becoming a three-way contest between two Spanish giants and an ambitious Moroccan project.

With Spain, Portugal and Morocco set to co-host the competition alongside symbolic centenary fixtures in South America, the question of where the final will be played has become one of the most hotly debated issues surrounding the tournament.

At the center of that debate are three stadiums: Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, Barcelona’s newly redeveloped Camp Nou, and a proposed 115,000-capacity venue in Casablanca.

Why Spain believes they should host the final

Spain’s football federation has made their position clear: the final should be played on Spanish soil. RFEF president Rafael Louzán has publicly backed the idea, arguing that Spain’s role in driving the joint bid with Portugal gives them a strong claim to host the showpiece event. From Spain’s perspective, staging the final is not just about logistics, but also recognition and legacy.

There is also a historical argument being made. Spanish officials believe the tournament’s modern bid structure was largely shaped by Iberian planning, with Morocco joining later in the process. That, they argue, strengthens Spain’s case to host the final match.

Bernabéu vs Camp Nou: Spain’s internal battle

Even within Spain, however, there is no single agreed venue and that has created a fascinating internal rivalry.

The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is widely seen as the early frontrunner. Recently renovated into one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the world, it offers a completed, ready-to-use venue in the capital, along with strong transport links and global prestige.

On the other hand, the Camp Nou, currently undergoing a massive redevelopment, could ultimately surpass it in scale. Once completed, it is expected to hold significantly more spectators than the Bernabéu, a factor that could weigh heavily in FIFA’s final decision.

Capacity matters for a World Cup final, not just in terms of ticket revenue but also atmosphere and global spectacle. Spanish officials themselves have acknowledged that the difference in seating could become a decisive factor.

Morocco’s bold Casablanca project

While Spain presents two elite, proven venues, Morocco is offering scale and symbolism. At the heart of their bid is a planned stadium in Casablanca, expected to hold around 115,000 fans. If completed as proposed, it would become one of the largest football stadiums in the world, instantly making it a standout candidate for the final.

For Morocco, hosting the World Cup final would be historic. It would mark the first time the tournament’s biggest match is held in the country, and potentially on the African continent under this new multi-nation format.

Beyond capacity, Morocco’s pitch is about growth and global representation. Awarding the final to Casablanca would send a powerful message about football’s expansion beyond its traditional European strongholds.

Who decides and what matters most?

Ultimately, the decision rests with FIFA, which will weigh several key factors before confirming the venue. Infrastructure readiness will be crucial, which may favor the already-completed Bernabéu. However, capacity and long-term impact could strengthen Camp Nou’s and Casablanca’s cases. Political balance within the multi-country hosting arrangement may also play a role, as FIFA looks to ensure fair representation among the host nations.

There is also the question of timing. With the tournament still years away, ongoing construction projects, particularly in Barcelona and Casablanca, will be closely monitored.
