The warning signs proved to be justified, and the worst fears were confirmed today. Cruz Azul will be without their star midfielder Andrés Montaño for the most crucial part of the campaign.

Montaño picked up a knee injury in the Clausura quarter final return leg against León. The club confirmed the worst this morning - Montaño suffered a torn ACL and meniscus damage in his left knee, an injury that will require a trip to the operating table and keep him off the field for several months.

A club statement read: “During the second leg of the Clausura 2025 quarterfinals against León, our No. 10 was forced to leave the match in the 8th minute due to injury. After undergoing medical exams, he was diagnosed this Tuesday with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in his left knee. Andrés will undergo surgery in the coming days to repair the injury. His recovery timeline will depend on his progress”.

Andrés Montaño’s injury: How did it happen?

The player pulled up during a sprint. While suddenly attempt to change direction, Montaño put excessive strain on an already weakened knee, leading to internal damage.

During the first leg, in which he scored two stunning goals, Montaño had already shown signs of trouble with the same knee, which made his inclusion in the return leg surprising.
