Cruz Azul confirm the worst news about Andrés Montaño
The midfielder requires surgery and will miss the Liguilla and next month’s CONCACAF Champions Cup final against the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The warning signs proved to be justified, and the worst fears were confirmed today. Cruz Azul will be without their star midfielder Andrés Montaño for the most crucial part of the campaign.
Montaño picked up a knee injury in the Clausura quarter final return leg against León. The club confirmed the worst this morning - Montaño suffered a torn ACL and meniscus damage in his left knee, an injury that will require a trip to the operating table and keep him off the field for several months.
A club statement read: “During the second leg of the Clausura 2025 quarterfinals against León, our No. 10 was forced to leave the match in the 8th minute due to injury. After undergoing medical exams, he was diagnosed this Tuesday with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in his left knee. Andrés will undergo surgery in the coming days to repair the injury. His recovery timeline will depend on his progress”.

Andrés Montaño’s injury: How did it happen?
The player pulled up during a sprint. While suddenly attempt to change direction, Montaño put excessive strain on an already weakened knee, leading to internal damage.
During the first leg, in which he scored two stunning goals, Montaño had already shown signs of trouble with the same knee, which made his inclusion in the return leg surprising.

Bogusz and Toro ready to step up
Meanwhile, Marcelino Fernández del Castillo has confirmed that Polish midfielder Mateusz Bogusz is fit and ready for the upcoming semifinals against Club América. As for Gabriel Fernández, should the team make it to the Liga MX Final, he may be pushed to play if necessary.
However, for the CONCACAF Champions Cup final against the Vancouver Whitecaps on June 1, he is expected to be back at full strength.

When is the 2025 Clausura semifinal?
The first leg of the semifinal against América will take place on Thursday, May 15, kicking off at 8:00 p.m. EST with Cruz Azul at home at Ciudad Universitaria.
The return leg is scheduled for Sunday, May 18, at 7:15 p.m. EST at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes.
