Cruz Azul misfit to make MLS move, but Mexicans miss out on target
After weeks of negotiations, Cruz Azul has reached an agreement to sell the Polish midfielder Mateusz Bogusz.
The Cruz Azul board has finally completed the departure of Mateusz Bogusz, who arrived at the club in January 2025 but never managed to settle in. However, the news of Bogusz’s move to Houston Dynamo comes far too late: the delay in freeing up that foreign-player slot ultimately pushed Miguel Ángel Borja past his limit. The Colombian striker, who had a pre-agreement in place since the end of last year, chose instead to accept a massive offer from Al-Wasl in the United Arab Emirates.
Cruz Azul’s race against time
According to reporting from TUDN’s Adrián Esparza Oteo, Cruz Azul now has an open non-Mexican trained roster spot following the Polish midfielder’s exit, but the market has grown complicated after losing their top option. Fans have criticized the front office, pointing out that Bogusz’s prolonged stay blocked Borja’s registration for weeks - a delay that ended with the striker signing a record-breaking contract in Asia. Now, the sporting department is racing against the clock to make use of the vacancy before the registration window closes.
The team must quickly turn the page and refocus on what happens on the field. Their next match is set for January 30 against Juárez, a showdown that promises extreme conditions. The border-side club has been training amid heavy snowfall, meaning Cruz Azul won’t just be facing a team eager to climb the standings - they’ll be up against a squad pushing to break into the top eight and fight for bigger ambitions.
