This weekend’s match between the Colorado Rapids and Inter Miami is now etched in gold letters in the history of American soccer, having attracted the second‑highest attendance ever witnessed in MLS.
How many fans were at Rapids vs Miami?
The presence of Lionel Messi in MLS sparks wild excitement in every city he visits, and this occasion was no exception. On Saturday, Empower Field at Mile High in Denver welcomed 75,824 fans through the turnstiles.
Rapids management had opted to stage the match at the Denver Broncos’ NFL stadium rather than at the soccer team’s usual home, DSG Park, in order to maximize attendance for the visit of the Argentine legend.
And Messi was the star of the show at Empower Field, netting twice for Miami as the defending MLS champions triumphed 3-2. It was the Floridians’ first game under Guillermo Hoyos, who has taken over as interim head coach following Javier Mascherano’s resignation.
Which game has the highest attendance in MLS history?
In the three-decade history of MLS, the only match that surpasses Saturday’s crowd took place on July 4, 2023, and it was none other than ‘El Tráfico’.
Played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the Los Angeles derby between the Galaxy and LAFC drew a crowd of 82,110.
How many fans can Empower Field hold?
The home of the Broncos - now firmly written into the MLS history books - has a capacity of 76,125. That means just 301 seats remained empty for the clash between the Pids and the Herons.
