Cruz Azul roster-building continues: CONCACAF champs leading the race for Liga MX star
Ahead of the Apertura 2025, Cruz Azul is reportedly close to signing a player who has Liga MX championship medals to his name.
Cruz Azul continues to bolster its squad just days before the start of the Apertura 2025. Following recent reports linking the club with Serbian striker Luka Jović -now a free agent after parting ways with AC Milan - another name is now on the verge of joining La Máquina: Jeremy Márquez.
A two-time Liga MX winner with Atlas
According to Super Deportivo, Cruz Azul has reached a verbal agreement to sign the midfielder, who has spent his entire professional career with Atlas. Born in 2000, Márquez made his debut with the Guadalajara-based club in 2020 and was part of the historic back-to-back championship run that ended a 70-year title drought for Los Rojinegros.
In the most recent Clausura 2025 campaign, Márquez featured in 14 of Atlas’ 17 matches, scoring twice and providing one assist. However, the team finished 14th in the regular-season standings, missing out on both the playoffs and the play-in round. With Cruz Azul actively reshaping its roster, the move presents a promising opportunity for Márquez to continue his development.
The CONCACAF champions are finalizing preparations for the new Liga MX tournament, the Apertura 2025, which kicks off on Saturday, July 12 with a matchup against Mazatlán. Should the deal be completed in time, Márquez could face his former club, Atlas, as early as matchday two on July 19.
