Negotiations between David de Gea and Manchester United over a new contract are underway. The Athletic report his current deal with the Red Devils expires in the summer of 2023, but the Spanish goalkeeper would be willing to extend it without a pay rise.

One of the possibilities being considered is the reduction of his current salary, which currently amounts to £375,000 per week, around £20 million gross per year. With his new contract, De Gea’s salary could be greatly reduced to half of what he is paid today.

De Gea has been at Old Trafford since 2011 and there is optimism over a new deal, although manager Erik ten Hag, who will make a decision on the goalkeeper, wants to tread carefully. “First we go to the winter and then we will talk about how we deal with the situation,” Ten Hag said last week.

The cautiousness of the Dutch coach is understood from a technical point of view. United are reportedly scouring the market for a second goalkeeper.

Unai Simón (Athletic Club) and Diogo Costa (FC Porto) have been scouted and are on the club’s shortlist. Previous United number two Dean Henderson is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest.
