Diego Cocca calls up 22 players for Mexico’s Nations League match against Suriname

Mexico are set to take on Suriname and Jamaica under new boss Cocca.

Mexico will return to action after the 2022 World Cup with the CONCACAF Nations League, where they will face Suriname and Jamaica this month.

Head coach Diego Cocca has called up 22 players for his first official match in charge. The former Atlas boss has called up five players currently plying their trade in Europe: Santiago Giménez, Érick Gutiérrez, Gerardo Arteaga, Johan Vásquez and Julián Arango.

Club América forward Henry Martin will not play in the first match but is expected to play against Jamaica at the Azteca Stadium.

Liga MX players

For the match to be played in the city of Paramaribo, Cocca has opted to bring a core of players who play in Liga MX.

  • Goalkeepers: Carlos Acevedo, José Antonio Rodríguez.
  • Defenders: Julián Araujo, Israel Reyes, Gerardo Arteaga, Gilberto Sepúlveda, Jesús Angulo, Johan Vásquez, Néstor Araujo, Kevin Álvarez.
  • Midfielders: Alfonso González, Carlos Rodríguez, Sebastián Córdova, Fernando Beltrán, Diego Lainez, Erick Gutiérrez, Marcel Ruiz, Erick Sánchez.
  • Forwards: Santiago Giménez, Uriel Antuna, Roberto de la Rosa, Roberto Alvarado.

The players left out who play in Liga MX are: Henry Martin, Luis Romo, Luis Chavez and Hector Moreno.

The Europeans who will not play against Suriname are: César Montes, Edson Álvarez, Jorge Sánchez, Hirving Lozano, Raúl Jiménez, Orbelín Pineda and Guillermo Ochoa.

Jamaica after Suriname

The match between Suriname and Mexico is scheduled for Thursday 23 March at 6pm (Central Mexican time). After that, El Tri will return to Mexico to face Jamaica at the Estadio Azteca.
