Domonik Szoboszlai casts doubt over Liverpool future with worrying statement
Liverpool are in a race for the top five in the Premier League, and even if they secure Champions League play, Domonik Szoboszlai isn’t guarantee to stay.

The Merseyside derby was decided in the last minute of stoppage time as Liverpool took all three points against Everton in their first match at the new Hill Dickson Stadium. While there was certainly cause for celebration after the victory, there were some worrying comments that came from their star midfielder Domonik Szoboszlai concerning his future.
Ball in club’s court
Virgil van Dijk scored a header off a corner kick from the Hungarian midfielder in the 10th minute of stoppage time to secure the win over Everton. The three points were vital not just because they beat their eternal enemies, but it was massive when it comes to their chase for the top five in the Premier League. The celebrations were dampened a bit when Szoboszlai admitted that he’s no closer to a new deal than he was a few months ago.
Szoboszlai has a contract at Anfield until 2028, but is looking for a new deal that reflects his importance to the team. “There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation,” admitted the former Leipzig man.
The Hungarian was brought to Liverpool from Leipzig in the summer of 2023 and has been a staple in the XI in the three seasons he has spent with the Reds. He has expressed his wishes to stay at the club repeatedly, but says now his focus is on finishing off the season strong. “We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that. As you guys know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see,” said Szoboszlai.
I see myself here long term, says Szoboszlai
Liverpool are currently fifth in the Premier League, clinging to the final spot in the Champions League with a comfortable seven point lead over Chelsea and Brentford who are in sixth and seventh, with 48 points. Szoboszlai has been one of the best on Arnie Slot’s squad all season and now he is looking to be rewarded after winning the title last year, and confirming his status as one of the most dependable players for the club.
From what Szoboszlai is telling reporters, he is leaving the next move completely in the hands of the club. “Of course I see myself here in the long term, but it is not really in my hands any more,” he said, freeing himself of any finger pointing from fans. “I love being here. I love the fans. My family is happy. I’m completely relaxed. We have five games to go. Then I am going to rest - a big one, after my international break. Then we will see.”
The Hungarian will not be competing in the World Cup this summer, which could free up some time for him and his agent to study potential destinations should contract negotiations continue to stall. Szoboszlai has previously pronounced his admiration for Real Madrid, and was linked to a summer move there, but was quick to shoot those rumors down.
