Donnarumma explains why he is leaving PSG

After four seasons, ten titles and a Champions League crown, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s time at Paris Saint-Germain has officially come to an end.

The Italian goalkeeper was left out of the squad for Wednesday’s European Super Cup final against Tottenham, and shortly after, he posted an emotional farewell on social media, confirming his departure from the club.

Donnarumma’s open letter to PSG fans

“To the special fans of Paris, from the very first day I arrived, I gave everything—on and off the field—to earn my place and defend PSG’s goal,” Donnarumma wrote. “Unfortunately, someone decided I could no longer be part of the group or contribute to the team’s success. I’m disappointed and discouraged.”

He went on to express his desire to say goodbye properly to the fans at Parc des Princes, adding: “If that doesn’t happen, please know that your support and love meant the world to me—and I’ll never forget it.”

He closed his message with heartfelt thanks to his teammates: “I’ll always carry the memories of those magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home. To my teammates—my second family—thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment shared. You’ll always be my brothers. Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honor.”

Luis Enrique takes full responsibility

Just minutes before Donnarumma’s post, head coach Luis Enrique confirmed the decision to leave him out of the Super Cup squad was entirely his own: “Gigio is an exceptional goalkeeper and an even better person. But in my PSG, I need a keeper with different qualities. That’s why we signed Chevalier. This was 100% my decision”.

PSG recently signed 23-year-old Lucas Chevalier from Lille in a deal worth up to $60 million including bonuses. The move signaled a clear shift in direction and effectively ended negotiations to renew Donnarumma’s contract, which runs through June 2026.

Donnarumma’s agent, Enzo Raiola, didn’t hold back in his criticism of PSG: “We’re shocked. The club has shown no respect after four years together,” Raiola told Sky Sports. “Gigio was even willing to take a pay cut, but PSG kept changing the terms. Now we’re exploring options—maybe in the Premier League, where clubs can meet PSG’s demands. They talk about respect, but it’s all about money”.

Where next for Donnarumma?

With PSG reportedly asking €50 million for the keeper, Raiola hinted that English clubs—possibly Manchester City—could be the most realistic landing spot.
