Group A World Cup 2022 final standings: Who qualified for the round of 16 and who is out?

It’s all looking much clearer in Group A which was resolved after Tuesday’s matches, the third and final games in the group.

As winners of Group A, the Netherlands will face the runners-up of Group B (England, Iran, USMNT or Wales) at Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday 3 December. Senegal meanwhile will face the winners of Group B the following day, Sunday 4 December, at Al Bayt Stadium.

Netherlands and Senegal will progress, the former beating Qatar by two goals to nil in the other kick-off.

Qatar are officially the worst performing hosts of a World Cup, not picking up a single point.

Despite needing a goal Ecuador have created little in the last 5 minutes and it's Senegal who continue to look the most dangerous. The Senegal wingers have been so dangerous today.

With 15 minutes to go Ecuador are going to have to throw everything forward.

Sarmiento has been electric since he came on. The ball makes it ways to Gonzalo Plata in the box who flicks it over the defender before firing a shot straight at Mendy. That was a big chance.

There was just two and a half minutes between those two goals.

Senegal have been keeping Ecuador quiet this half.

Another effort for Ecuador this time comes from a head after Sarmiento works some space with some neat dribbling.

They're having the better chances this half.

Ecuador has crafted their first chance of the have with Angelo Preciado crossing the ball low but it is easily cleared. 

Senegal look like they are going to sit deep and try to hold on to this lead.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has scored to effectively send the Netherlands to the next round.

If both games stay how they are then Netherlands will finish top with Senegal second.

Really embarrassing moment for Enner Valencia as he gets into an argy bargy with Sabaly. Sabaly touches Valencia's leg who throws himself to the floor.

Thanksfully referee Clement Turpin does nothing about it.

Ecuador are going to have to start trying to attack this half. Despite some possession they have created very little.

Angelo Preciado misjudges his header playing Ismaila Sarr through. The Watford winger touches the ball past Piero Reyna who clumsily crashes into him.

VAR won't overturn this.

Moises Caicedo was fairly chopped down near the halfway line, spinning around on the floor as Senegal break.

They create probably their best chance of the half working it into the box but Dia is crowded out and the shot is smothered by Hernan Galíndez.

Ecuador have begun to play themselves into this half, taking more of the possession and restricting Senegal to half-chances.

Saying that Estupinan clatters Pathé Ciss to give away a free-kick on the halfway line which is headed over.

What that means for this game is that it is even more unlikely that Qatar will beat the Netherlands, meaning Senegal must win this game to progress.

Sarr puts in a good cross from the left again but Boulaye Dia can't get enough on it to make it a proper chance.

Ismaila Sarr outmuscles Preciado in what looks like will be the deciding battle of the match.

He works some space for a curling right-foot shot but the ball is deflected behind for a corner.

Galindez comfortably punches the corner again.

Ecuador's Angelo Preciado has been down for the last three minutes. Not totally clear what he has injured, whether it was from the landing or the contact as he was fouled.

Who is the referee for Ecuador vs Senegal in the World Cup 2022 Group A final game?

Overseeing the action at Khalifa International Stadium will be French referee Clément Turpin and his team. He will be accompanied by his compatriots - assistant referees Nicolas Danos and Cyril Gringore while Romanian Istvan Kovacs has been designated as the fourth official.

During his 12 years as an international referee, he has been selected for a number of major club tournaments including the Europa League (2010–11), Champions League (2014-15 to present) and Club World Cup (2021-22). He was in charge of last season’s Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid in Paris - one of 40 appearances in the competition.

Senegal go into the game knowing that they will almost certainly have to win if they are to finish in the top two. With that in mind, they will have to attack an Ecuador defence that has been extremely resolute of late, with the goal they let in against the Netherlands ending a run of six games without conceding.
