Who is the referee for Ecuador vs Senegal in the World Cup 2022 Group A final game?

The 40-year-old French match official has been an Elite group referee since 2012. This is his second World Cup.

Group A will be the first to be settled with the third and final matches taking place today and the top two teams advancing to the Round of 16. Apart from Qatar, who have already been eliminated, the remaining three teams will be contesting the top two places and there are a number of possible outcomes in a group that is wide open. The Netherlands and Ecuador are level pegging at the top, both with the same amount of points (4), and an identical goal difference (+2) - and who ends up winning the group could be decided on goal difference.

That means that not only do Ecuador need to beat Senegal to finish top of Group A, they need to get a better result than the Netherlands, who take on Qatar. And Senegal, third on three points, cannot be ruled out - they could also snatch second place but must beat Ecuador.

Overseeing the action at Khalifa International Stadium will be French referee Clément Turpin and his team. He will be accompanied by his compatriots - assistant referees Nicolas Danos and Cyril Gringore while Romanian Istvan Kovacs has been designated as the fourth official.

Clément Turpin experience in finals

Turpin is a highly experienced referee who gained his FIFA badge in 2010. Domestically, he has refereed in 251 Ligue 1 matches and several finals including the Coupe de France (2010-11 and 2015-16), Coupe de la Ligue (2017-18) and the Trophée des Champions (2014-15).

During his 12 years as an international referee, he has been selected for a number of major club tournaments including the Europa League (2010–11), Champions League (2014-15 to present) and Club World Cup (2021-22). He was in charge of last season’s Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid in Paris - one of 40 appearances in the competition. The previous year he oversaw the Europa League Final between Villarreal and Manchester United in Gdansk.

Internationally, he was selected as one of the match officials for the World Cup qualifying rounds at Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018. This is his second time officiating at the finals. During the previous edition in Russia, he was handed two group stage games - Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia and Switzerland vs Costa Rica.

This will also be his second appearance at the 2022 World Cup, he and his team made their tournament debut in the 0-0 draw between Uruguay and South Korea on 24 November. In that game he issued two yellow cards - one to each side (Martín Cáceres and Gue-sung Cho.

He served at Euro 2016 in France and was one of the five European referees at the 2014 Brazil Olympic Games.
