Eduardo ‘Mudo’ Aguirre is expected to join Cruz Azul ahead of the Apertura 2023 tournament, according to TUDN’s Alan Lara. He will become the second new arrival following the signing of Carlos Salcedo, who joined from Santos.

The Mexican forward is the first acquisition in the Celeste attack which needs to be reinforced following the departures of two players whose loan contracts have expired: Gonzalo Carneiro, who has returned to Sion and Michael Estrada, who is back with Toluca.

Aguirre hardly featured at all in the Clausura 2023 - he underwent surgery for a discal hernia problem in January. His only appearance for Santos Laguna was in the 0-3 defeat to Toluca - a game in which he was sent off. He reappeared in April, coming on as a substitute for the final 25 minutes of the penultimate regular season game against Querétaro.

The 24-year-old, a native of San Pedro, Coahuila, scored three goals during the Apertura 2022 and provided one assist in 17 games, 15 of them as a starter.

He is currently valued at 2.80 million euros according to Transfermarkt’s most recent calculation (March). His contract with Santos Laguna ends in June 2024, so Cruz Azul would have to pay a similar figure to bring him onboard.

He has been an international with Mexico since youth level and was part of the side that picked up the bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He has been capped three times at senior level, having made his debut against Ecuador in October 2021.
