New York Red Bulls are reportedly poised to add Sweden international Emil Forsberg to their squad ahead of the 2024 MLS season.

Deal in place for Forsberg MLS switch

According to the specialist transfer-news journalist Fabrizio Romano, Forsberg has reached a verbal agreement over a four-year contract with the Red Bulls, who exited the 2023 MLS playoffs earlier this month.

A Forsberg move to New York, which has also been reported by the German newspaper Bild, would see the 32-year-old remain within Red Bull’s sporting empire. He has spent nearly nine years at Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, who are also owned by the energy-drink giant.

Forsberg’s stats for Leipzig and Sweden

Since moving to Leipzig from Malmö in January 2015, Forsberg has made 318 appearances in all competitions for Die Roten Bullen, scoring 69 times and providing 67 assists.

He has helped Leipzig to two DFB-Pokals, in 2022 and 2023, as well as a DFL-Supercup win over Bayern Munich in August.

At international level, Forsberg has won 84 caps for Sweden, netting 20 times. He was part of the Scandinavians’ squad for the 2018 World Cup, and the 2016 and 2020 European Championships.

Cincinnati end Red Bulls’ 2023 hopes

The New York Red Bulls, who have never won MLS, were knocked out of the 2023 playoffs by Supporters’ Shield winners FC Cincinnati 10 days ago.

After finishing eighth in the Eastern Conference in the regular season, Troy Lesesne’s men eliminated Charlotte FC in the wild card round, but were beaten 2-0 in their best-of-three round one series with Cincinnati.

The 2024 MLS campaign is due to get underway in February next year.
