Keane on Tuchel's team talk
While Harry Kane and Declan Rice rained praise on Thomas Tuchel for his halftime chat with the boys, there were some who weren't as impressed. It should come as no surprise that Roy Keane was less than enthusiastic with the change in dynamic out of the break, and was quick to point out that Tuchel doesn’t deserve as much praise as he is getting from his player or from the media. “Is it a bit of an overreaction to his half-time team talk? What’s he supposed to do? That is his job isn’t it? That’s the manager’s job to give them the information and they go out and produce,” said Keane.
Tuchel after Croatia win
There were a lot of positives to take out of the win over Croatia, but England Manager Thomas Tuchel isn't getting to carried away. “We need to do things better,” he said. “Defensively we dropped a little too deep from a middle block into a low block and deep block, which is in itself not a problem, but we went a bit too early. We were a bit too man-man focused and didn’t rely enough on our structure to be able to push out again.” The German manager said that maybe those mistakes can serve useful as learning lessons for the future. “Maybe it is good that we conceded, because it just tells us: 'Let’s not do this again.’ It makes no sense, it’s not us, it doesn’t play to our strengths. We had too many easy ball losses after ball wins, so we had a huge effort against the ball, win the ball, gave it back straight away.
England XI vs. Croatia
Looking back on the England XI against Croatia, you see Gordon, Madueke and Bellingham in the middle of the pitch behind Kane. There were some doubts as to whether Bellingham would be in the XI, and whether Tuchel would go with Saka or Madueke but both of those players made an impact in the opener.
Group L standings
Having a look at the Group L standings, we see these two teams at the top of the table after their opening match wins. Whoever wins this match will sleep as leaders of the group and put themselves in fantastic position to win the group. If England wins and Croatia beats or draws with Panama, that would mean the Three Lions would top the group no matter what happens in the final match day of the group stages. The interesting match on the final day of group stages will most likely be Ghana and Croatia who will be likely playing for the second spot in the group and automatic qualification for the round of 32.
Last match: Ghana
It was not as anticipated of a match as the other match in this group, but Ghana and Panama met to kick off their World Cup campaigns, and after 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, the deadlock was broken with a 95th minute goal Caleb Yirenkyi. It was a dramatic end to a match that didn't have a whole lot of chances. Ghana is going have to be a bit more attacking minded against the England team that will be looking to put out another convincing performance.
Last match: England
Two giants of the game met to open their World Cup campaign. Croatia who had been to the final and the semis in the last two editions of the WC took on England in a mouthwatering match to kickoff their campaigns. England took it to Croatia from the very start. Harry Kane put the Three Lions up from the penalty spot, but Croatia responded with a fantastic goal from Martin Batruina. Kane put England back in the lead with a header off a corner but Croatia responded with another golazo. Out of the break it was Jude Bellingham scored a great goal on a long run into the box and slotted it past the Croatia keeper. Marcus Rashford secured the three points with an 85th minutes goal and England began to start dreaming of it coming home.
We are live from New England
Hello everyone and welcome to Foxborough where the Three Lions are looking to make another statement after their impressive win over Croatia to kick off their World Cup campaign. There were questions, there were maybe even doubts around Thomas Tuchel's squad but last week’s match seem to quite those doubters, and now add a little more expectation of this very talented side. Ghana, on the other hand, comes in to this match, with no expectation, with three points already in their pocket and looking to extinguish some of the excitement in England. They can do that today from New England, but know it’s going to be a much tougher match than the one they played against Panama last week.
